Yuma Scorpions News Release

CHICO, Calif. - Despite a tremendous effort by Scorpions starting pitcher Eric Maydew, Yuma needed 10 innings to defeat the Chico Outlaws 6-3 Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium.

The Wheat Ridge, Colo. native pitched eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out eight earning a no decision.

After Chico tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of ninth inning, Yuma (9-1, 30-18) didn't waste much time reclaiming the lead.

Designated hitter Pascual Matos led off the 10th with a long home run to center field, sparking a four-run inning in the frame.

Yosvany Almario singled in Hector Bernal to give a Yuma a 4-2 lead before Henry Calderon made the lead four, when he knocked in Almario and Jordan Prado on a single to center field.

The Scorpions bullpen held on for the victory as Aaron Wilson pitched the 10th allowing just one run on one hit. Neil Hayes (2-1) was credited with the win after striking out two Outlaws hitters in the bottom of the ninth.

Chico (3-7, 28-20) tied the game up at 2-2 in the ninth on a Jason Van Meetren single, scoring Scott Dragicevich from third base. Van Meetren's single came with the infield drawn in, to prevent the game-tying run to score.

Yuma took the initial lead in the top of the first inning, as Prado was driven in on a Calderon groundout, putting the Scorpions ahead 1-0.

They jumped ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth when Prado knocked in Matos on a double down the left-field line.

The two teams square off later tonight with first pitch at 6:05 p.m. Scorpions righty Steve Soja (5-3, 4.01 ERA) will try to finish off the sweep as he faces Outlaws right-handed pitcher John Jefferson (3-1, 3.98).

All the action can be heard with Mitch McLaughlin on KLBU 560 AM and yumascorpions.com.
