[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Behind two third period goals, Colorado beat New Mexico 3-1 on Wednesday night. The loss kept the Scorpions four points behind division leader Odessa.
After a scoreless second period, the Eagles got a game winning goal from Brett Hammond. Hammond was able to glide the puck through the legs of goaltender Jason Wolfe for his fourth goal of the season. Former Scorpion Konrad Reeder added a late insurance goal.
Colorado showed why their power play is ranked tops in the Central Hockey League. Greg Pankewicz scored with the man advantage 4:41 into the contest.
The Scorpions played solid defense throughout the opening period, eventually turning it into offense. Torren Delforte fed the puck to the net where Chris Robertson pushed it in for his seventh goal of the season.
The Scorpions stay home for a weekend set against Arizona. Friday will be round one as the puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
