San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
For only the third time in 2006 the San Diego Surf Dawgs failed to score at least one run as they fell to the Yuma Scorpions 7-0 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Aaron Wilson (2-4) took the loss and Brian Bunyan (5-6) pitched seven innings of four-hit baseball for the victory.
The Scorpions wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, throwing a rally together in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. A leadoff walk to Javier Lopez ended up with Lopez stealing second and then scoring on a Billy Kovatch double; 1-0 Yuma. Kovatch would go on to have a big night at the plate going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. Billy Malone followed Kovatch with a single that Wilson was unable to glove and Kovatch moved to third. He would score on the very next play when Jacob Guzman grounded out to Tony Garcia at short, 2-0 Scorpions.
Yuma would add one in the third, two in the fourth and then be held scoreless until the ninth when they added on two more. Mike Leishman pitched three innings of solid relief, allowing two unearned runs with four strikeouts for the Dawgs.
Adam Mandel, Johnny Day, Will Henderson and Joey Huskins were the only Surf Dawgs to collect hits this evening. San Diego was unable to push across a run despite getting the leadoff man on in four of the first five innings.
Tomorrow will be the final home game of the 2006 season for the Surf Dawgs. Brent Pourciau (4-6) is scheduled to start for San Diego (17-19) while Steve Dunham (4-6) is penciled in to start for Yuma (14-22). It will be Fan Appreciation Night at the ballpark and Mayor Jerry Sanders will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. PT.
