
Scorpions Add Major Leaguer

The Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League added a former major league pitcher to their training camp roster on Monday. Korean star Cha-Seung Baek, who started 20 games for the San Diego Padres in 2008, joined 15 other hopefuls in the battle for a spot in the rotation.
The 29 year old Baek was drafted by the Seattle Mariners and played only three years in their minor league system before joining the MLB club in the 2004 season. He had 24 big league starts for the Mariners over four seasons.
Baek joins another former major league pitcher with the Scorpions. Bill Pulsipher, the Yuma player/coach had six full seasons in the majors with the New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers (2 seasons), Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. He has appeared in 106 major league games including 42 starts.
Also fighting for a roster spot on the mound are: Venezuelan Cibney Bello, the ace of the Tucson Toros staff last season in the GBL; left hander Ryan DiPietro who pitched in the Atlantic League the past two seasons including 18 starts summer in Camden; fellow lefty Drew Coffey, who had 16 starts between the American Association and United League in 2009; Daryl Arreola, who played the past two seasons with Lincoln in the American Association and Daniel Chaffardet, who pitched for Reno in the Golden League two seasons ago before spending a year in the Venezuelan Parallel League.
Youngsters looking for a job in the bullpen include: Adam Kramer, Adam Moreno, Matt Stone, Jason Fronczak, Pedro Ramos and Johny Noland.
The Scorpions continue workouts throughout the week at Desert Sun Stadium. On Monday, May 17 they will host the Heroes of the Diamond, the United States Military All-Star baseball team at 6:30 p.m. at Desert Sun Stadium.
Heroes of the Diamond features a roster of 21 current and former members of the Armed Forces, including Arizona Western College alumni and pitcher Joe Martinez. The game is presented by the Arizona Army National Guard and all military personnel and their families will be admitted free with a military identification.
