New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Scorpions Head Coach Randy Murphy has made a trade with Laredo to acquire goaltender Ryan Gibb from Laredo. In exchange the Bucks receive forward Mitch Stephens.
Gibb, 23, has played in 15 games recording a 9-3-2 record. The rookie from Toronto has posted a 2.96 goals against average and .908 save percentage, 10th best in the Central Hockey League.
"I feel this upgrades our goaltending position immediately," said Murphy. "Ryan will help strengthen our backend and to get a player of his caliber, you have to give something in return."
Over the past two season Stephens has played in 93 games scorpion 87 points (30G, 57A). He leaves the Scorpions as this season's second leading scorer with a career high 46 points.
"Mitch has been great for our organization over the past two seasons," said Murphy. "This was not the easiest decision to make but I felt this trade will help our team get better."
This is the second trade the Scorpions have made with Laredo in team history. Gibb will join the team in time for the upcoming game against Colorado.
In a separate transaction, the Scorpions have waived goaltender Andrew Martin. Last year's CHL All-Star has played in 28 games this season posting a 9-14-0 record with a 4.06 save percentage.
The Scorpions head to the road this weekend for a pair of games against the Eagles. Catch all the action Friday and Saturday on the CHL Network starting at 7 p.m.
New Mexico returns to the Santa Ana Star Center the weekend of February 6th. The first 1,500 fans through the gates receive pucks courtesy of the City of Rio Rancho. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
The following night is "Salute to the Badges Night." Prior to the game, enjoy the annual "Cops vs. Fire" battle starting at 4:30 p.m. The Scorpions will auction off special jerseys worn during their game to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico.
