Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Rocky Mountain Rage squared off in the first of three-straight to close out their 2008-09 regular season series Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Rookie forward Adam Perry recorded four points, including his first-ever professional hat trick to lead his club to its first win in its last seven games, 4-2 over the Rage. With the win, Arizona moves back into the Southern Conference's fifth and final playoff spot, one point ahead of Corpus Christi.
Arizona took an early 1-0 lead as Perry tallied the first period's lone goal 3:12 into the contest. Open below the far circle, Perry one-timed a Chris Bartolone cross-ice feed past Rage netminder Marty Magers for his 14th of the season. Peter Cartwright also assisted on the play to help his club to the early one-goal lead. The Sundogs held a 14-10 advantage in shots through the opening 20 minutes of play Wednesday night.
Rocky Mountain pulled even at one goal apiece midway through the second but the Sundogs converted for two goals less than three minutes apart late in the frame to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. Rage forward Brent Cullaton opened scoring in the period, sliding a rebound past the Sundogs' Marco Emond following a Scott Wray shot from just inside the blue line at the 10:39 mark. Joel Irving regained a one-goal lead for his club six minutes later with his 27th tally of the year, moving him back into a tie for the league lead. Rob Lehtinen earned his 10th assist of the season, chipping the puck off the boards to Perry who found Irving alone between the circles for the easy re-direct. The Sundogs stretched their lead to 3-1 with 51 seconds to play in the period as Jon Landry sent a pass the length of the ice to an uncontested Perry who slipped a second-chance forehand effort past Magers for his second goal and third point of the game. Arizona outshot Rocky Mountain for the second-straight period, 13-8, for a two-period 27-18 advantage through 40 minutes of play.
Recipients of two consecutive 5-on-3 power plays to start the third period, the visiting Rage cut Arizona's lead back to one as Simon Watson sent a wrist shot far post for his sixth of the season from Pat Sutton and Kai Magnussen at the 4:06 mark. Perry capped off his four-point night with an unassisted empty net goal with less than a minute to play in regulation for his first professional hat trick, sealing the 4-2 win.
Emond improved to 14-10-3 on the year with a 36-save performance Wednesday night while Magers fell to 10-9-2 on the year, stopping 29 of 32 shots in the loss. Arizona finished 0-for-2 with the man advantage and held the Rage to a 1-for-6 performance on the power play.
