Modesto Nuts News Release
It is starting to feel like spring around Modesto, and with that there is a flurry of activity taking place at John Thurman Field. Most notably, workers plan to begin the installation of the Modesto Nuts' new, state-of-the-art video scoreboard today. The scoreboard will be going up in increments throughout the week. The scoreboard will change the way baseball is watched at John Thurman Field with the inclusion of instant replay as well as many interactive features that will really enhance the fan experience in 2007. In other John Thurman Field news, the visiting bullpens have now been moved to make way for the expanded east barbecue area. The visitors bullpen now sits in foul territory down the left-field line.
In baseball related news, there have been a number of former Modesto Nuts who have really made an impact on Rockies Spring Training in 2007. 2005 Modesto Nuts shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is battling veteran Clint Barmes for the Rockies starting shortstop job. After being hit by a pitch Saturday, Tulowitzki went to get x-rays on his wrist. Rockies staff were hoping that Tulowitzki's injury was not a broken bone, and the results that came back confirmed that the injury was minor. The Rockies do not believe that this injury will have any bearing on his competition for the shortstop position. Tulowitzki should see more Spring Training action later this week.
Another former Modesto Nuts player had a huge, game changing impact on the Rockies' Sunday, March 11th game against the Kansas City Royals. Former Nuts right-fielder, Seth Smith, proved to be the hero after belting a 3-run, walk off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the Royals 5-4.
Finally, the Rockies have begun cutting down their Major League roster, and there were a number of former Modesto Nuts who were reassigned to minor league camp. They include former Nuts relievers Alberto Arias and Josh Newman, and former Nuts starting pitchers Juan Morillo, Greg Reynolds and Franklin Morales.
Other former Nuts who are performing well in Rockies camp include Ian Stewart, who won the Rockies Spring Training Player of the Year Award in 2006. Stewart is again off to a great spring with an average of .316 with 1 home run and 3 RBI. Another former Modesto Nuts player who is really turning heads is reliever Manuel Corpas. So far this spring, Corpas has appeared in 3 games, pitching 3 innings without yielding a hit! Corpas has also recorded one save in his three appearances.
Modesto Nuts mini-plans and season ticket packages are currently available. The Nuts have also opened up individual game tickets which can be purchased by calling the Modesto Nuts box office or logging on to www.modestonuts.com. For more information about tickets, or for any questions contact the Modesto Nuts at (209) 572-HITS (4487).
