Scocca's Cycle, Four Homers, Leads Vermont Past New Bedford
June 27, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
In a game that included Mountaineers right fielder Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield) hitting for the cycle, a position player pitching for New Bedford, and just about everything in-between, the Vermont Mountaineers topped the New Bedford Bay sox 15-1.
Scocca's cycle is the first in Mountaineers history. He hit a two-run homer in the third, a double in the second, a triple in the sixth, and a single capped his day in the eighth.
Vermont third baseman Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri), first baseman Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall), and DH Ryan Fineman (Bloomington, Ind./Indiana) also homered on the day.
Mogues had four RBIs after he went three-for-four. Ezell and Scoca combined for six RBIs.
Vermont starter Sam Bordner (Baltimore, Ohio/Louisville) got the win after pitching five innings, allowing one run on two hits. New Bedford started Phil Reese (Frederick, Md./Holy Cross College), who suffered the loss, throwing four innings and allowing four runs on five hits.
New Bedford's offense came in the fourth inning when Ryan Wolfsberg (Lincoln, Mass./Hamilton) knocked an RBI double, driving in Ryan Baldwin (Fairhaven, Mass./Barry).
The Mountaineers scored runs in every inning except for the first and fourth. Fifteen runs scored is the most by any team in the NECBL so far this season.
An RBI single in the second by Ryan Fineman got them going, and they never slowed up. The 'Neers tacked on three more in the third thanks to Scocca's homer and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mogues.
Vermont got four more in the fifth via a homer by Mogues, and an RBI triple by Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville).
From there, it was an offensive onslaught for Vermont.
The Mountaineers will be in action again on Tuesday when they take on the Plymouth Pilgrims. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at Recreation Field in Montpelier. The game can be heard on locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
