Schremp, Rau Each Net Two in Pirates Win

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates (2-1-0-0) beat the Hershey Bears (1-2-0-0) 5-2 in Sunday matinee action at the Cross Insurance Arena. It was a two-goal game for Rob Schremp and Kyle Rau, as well as the first win as a Portland Pirate for goaltender Sam Brittain (1-0-0).

Hershey's Erik Burgdoerfer suffered an interference penalty at 16:08 in the first, giving Portland a man-advantage. The Pirates were able to convert on the power play and got the first goal of the game at 16:32, scored by Schremp and assisted by MacKenzie Weegar and Shane Harper.

Rau added to the score, assisted by Wayne Simpson, making it 2-0 Pirates early on in the second period at 1:11. Schremp landed his second goal of the night at 10:40 in the second stanza, assisted by Cameron Gaunce and Harper. The assist was Gaunce's 100th career professional point. The Bears answered with a goal at 15:20 off the stick of Paul Carey, assisted by Carter Camper and Dustin Gazley. Rau potted his second goal of the night at 17:53, assisted by Mike Matheson and Simpson.

The Bears added one more goal at 5:34 in the third when Riley Barber scored, assisted by Travis Boyd and Connor Carrick, to make it 4-2. John McFarland was awarded a penalty shot at 16:43 in the third on a tripping call, and was able to get the puck past Hershey goaltender Dan Ellis (1-1-0) on the one-on-one opportunity.

Brittain blocked 17 of 19 Hershey shots this afternoon, bringing his Gorham Savings Bank Saves For Charity total to $170. Ellis stopped 23 of 28 Pirate shots.

The Portland Pirates will have a home-and-home series with the Albany Devils this coming weekend. The Pirates return to action this Friday, October 23, when they host the Albany Devils at 7 p.m. Friday Night is Hockey Night in Portland, and college students will receive a discount when they show their ID's at the box office courtesy of Sun Tan City. Portland will then hit the road on Saturday, October 24 to face the Devils at 5:05 p.m. in Albany. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
