The United States Hockey League has named Akira Schmid as its Goaltender of the Week for the week ending March 7th.
Schmid earned two wins in as many appearances over the weekend, including a shutout victory at Des Moines on Friday. During that span he recorded 52 saves and allowed just two goals in 120 minutes of total ice time.
Schmid was drafted by New Jersey in the fifth round (136th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. A native of Bern, Switzerland, Schmid is in the midst of his second season with the Musketeers. He boasts a 2.37 goals against average and a .907 save percentage, both third-best in the USHL.
Schmid and the Musketeers are currently riding a three-game winning streak and have won five of their last six games. The Musketeers return to action this Saturday and Sunday to host Tri City and Fargo, respectively.
