Schingoethe Commits to WMU

February 23, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Forward Wyatt Schingoethe will carry his books - and hockey sticks - to Kalamazoo to play college hockey for the Western Michigan Broncos, the Waterloo Black Hawks announced Tuesday.

Schingoethe is in his third year with the Hawks. As a 16-year-old rookie in 2018/19, the Algonquin, Illinois, native finished in a tie as Waterloo's sixth-leading scorer with 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) while appearing in all 62 games. Last year, he was up to third on the team with 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) in the COVID-19-shortened campaign. Adding his marks from 2020/21 so far, Schingoethe has 36 total goals and 49 assists for 85 points in 132 regular season USHL contests. He is also a career +19 player.

Despite missing seven games earlier this season, the now-18-year-old has eight goals and six assists this winter. Schingoethe's year has included one game-winning goal, notched on January 9th during a 6-4 comeback victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede. He also produced the second hat trick of his USHL career on January 26th during a game against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

Before the current season began, Schingoethe was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the 195th overall pick. That makes him the third Maple Leaf draft choice to skate for Waterloo, joining Tony Cameranesi (2011) and Lubos Velebny (2000).

Waterloo originally acquired Schingoethe through the USHL tender process in 2018.

Schingoethe will skate as a Bronco with current Waterloo teammate Max Sasson, who is also committed to Western Michigan.
