Schingoethe Commits to Denver

Waterloo, Iowa - Weeks ahead of his second season with the Waterloo Black Hawks, forward Wyatt Schingoethe has committed to the University of Denver, the Black Hawks announced Tuesday.

The youngest regular on Waterloo's roster during 2018/19, Schingoethe was one of six Black Hawks players to appear in all 62 regular season games last season. From Thanksgiving to the beginning of the USHL's holiday break, the then-16-year-old recorded a point in eight consecutive games. As an important contributor on Waterloo special teams, Schingoethe notched 15 power play points (three goals, 12 assists). Those figures helped him accumulate 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) tying for sixth among Black Hawks skaters.

"Wyatt proved he has the talent to compete at this level," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "This season, our expectations - and his - are that he continues to build on 2018/19 and accepts the challenge to improve all aspects of his game."

Before the 2018 USHL Draft, the Black Hawks acquired Schingoethe under the league's tender rules. The tender process allows teams to bypass the draft for a 16-year-old player, while guaranteeing that he will be in the lineup for a minimum percentage of games that season.

"It takes an exceptional player to come in and make a substantial contribution as a 16-year-old," said Black Hawks Associate Head Coach and Director of Scouting & Player Personnel Shane Fukushima. "Wyatt proved he had that sort of ability. We don't tender a player every year; in his case, we knew we were getting a player who could make the Black Hawks a better team."

Schingoethe's scoring effort from last winter made him the first 16-year-old since Shane Bowers in 2015/16 to record 30 or more points at that age. Both players completed their first year in Waterloo with 33.

The Denver Pioneers are just two years removed from winning the 2016/17 NCAA championship with three former Black Hawks on their roster: Michael Davies, Tyson McLellan, and Blake Hillman. Davies and McLellan will both be seniors during the coming 2019/20 season.
