Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - For the Charleston Swamp Foxes arenafootball2 team, it's very simple; Win.
To have any chance at the 2003 postseason, the Foxes must win their final two home games, this Saturday, July 19 versus the Columbus Wardogs and in two weeks, July 26 versus the Richmond Speed.
And yet, the Swamp Foxes will still need help from around the league to make the post-season field of 12.
Currently, the Swamp Foxes (7-7) stand in a two-way tie for third place in the American Conference's Atlantic Division with the Greensboro Prowlers (7-7). However, due to the Prowlers two-game sweep of the Foxes, Greensboro holds the advantage heading into the final two weeks of the season.
Slumping Cape Fear (8-6) is tied with the rallying Norfolk Nighthawks (8-6) for first in the division, but currently holds the tiebreaker over the `Hawks in head-to-head meetings.
The best scenario for the Swamp Foxes would to have Greensboro lose either this week at Richmond or next week at Norfolk. Eight losses by Greensboro would essentially eliminate them from postseason contention.
If Norfolk defeats Greensboro in two weeks, the Nighthawks must fall to Cape Fear this week otherwise Norfolk would win the division outright with a 10-6 record.
If Cape Fear defeats Norfolk this Saturday in Fayetteville, they then must lose at home to Memphis in two weeks to create a tie with Charleston atop the standings. In the case of a three-way tie â Cape Fear, Charleston, and Norfolk â Norfolk would be eliminated by having lost two games to the âCats and the Foxes would win out by head-to-head points spread with Cape Fear.
Elsewhere in the American Conference, undefeated Tennessee Valley and the Northeast Division winner will have a bye in Week One of the Quest for the 2003 ArenaCup. The only thing left to deter mine is whether it will be the Albany Conquest (11-3) holding on to the Northeast title, or will the second-year Mohegan Wolves (9-5) dethrone the âQuest and take home-field.
Things in the National Conference have appeared to calm down, with the expansion Cincinnati Swarm, San Diego Riptide, and Memphis Xplorers all three barely hanging onto playoff hopes. Quad City (12-2) and Tulsa (11-3) have secured first-round byes, while Hawaii (9-5), who currently leads the West Division, is battling Wichita (8-6) for the divisional crown and home field for the first-round.
Arkansas (8-6) and Bakersfield (7-7) round out the six-team National Conference bracket as of right now.
