FRIDAY'S GAMES
WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON 55, Albany 49 OT (Attendance: 5,457): CHRIS BODEN found COSMO DEMATTEO for a 25-yard strike in overtime to lift the Pioneers (6-8) over the first place Conquest (11-3). Dematteo, who was named Game MVP, totaled 13 catches for 143 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Albany's RYAN VENA threw for 310 yards and seven touchdowns, including two to COREY HILL. Hill, who had 11 receptions for 144 yards, caught a seven-yard touchdown at the buzzer in the fourth quarter to send the game into the extra session.
RICHMOND 44, Mohegan 41 (Attendance: 1,636): DAMON THOMPSON hauled in six passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns as the Speed (6-8) topped the Wolves (9-5). The Speed led 27-21 late in the third quarter when kicker PETER MARTINEZ connected on a 55-yard field goal to push the lead the nine points. Mohegan rallied for 20 points in the final quarter, but couldn't overcome the deficit. MEL LONG led the Wolves with eight catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
Charleston 64, BOSSIER CITY 33 (Attendance: 2,791): The Swamp Foxes (7-7) created six turnovers on defense and posted the second-highest scoring total of the season to keep playoff hopes alive with a convincing win over the slumping Battle Wings (3-12). LEROY MCFADDEN and ANTOINE CALLOWAY each caught a pair of touchdowns for the Swamp Foxes. JOHNNY TURMAN went 11-of-21 passing for 144 yards and three touchdowns before being relieved in the final quarter. Bossier City QB PAYTON PERRETT tossed four touchdowns along with four interceptions.
SATURDAY'S GAMES
NORFOLK 42, Macon 37 (Attendance: 4,002): DARYL RICHARDSON'S three-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter carried the Nighthawks (8-6) past the Knights (8-6). Game MVP TRAVIS BURNS caught seven passes for 83 yards with two touchdowns and he ran back a kickoff 52 yards for a score. CHRIS WALLACE and AARON SPARROW combined to go 16-of 25 passing for 189 yards and four touchdowns. Macon's ANTHONY SNEAD totaled 13 catches for 165 yards and one touchdown.
COLUMBUS 43, Birmingham 42 (Attendance: 3,959): TERENCE SAMUEL'S rush on a two-point conversion with no time left pushed the Wardogs (4-10) past the Steeldogs (7-7). Samuel also caught three of the Wardogs' four receiving touchdowns, totaling 81 yards on seven catches. QB SHERARD POTEETE passed for 285 yards with four touchdowns and he rushed for another score. Birmingham's DEMONTRAY CARTER caught two receiving touchdowns and he returned a kickoff 55 yards for another score. GREENSBORO 69, Cape Fear 68 OT (Attendance: 3,708): CALEB SLOVER threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Game MVP ANDREW LAYTON in overtime and kicker JAMES THOMAS converted the extra point as the Prowlers (7-7) knocked off the Atlantic Division leading Wildcats (8-6). Slover completed 21-of-30 passes for 321 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions and he rushed for another score, becoming the only af2QB to pass for nine touchdowns and be responsible for 10 touchdowns this season. DAVID HILL (8 receptions for 108 yards) and BOBBY SIPPIO (6 receptions for 110 yards) each tallied three touchdowns for the Prowlers. Cape Fear's BRYAN SNYDER, who threw for 352 yards, tossed three of his six touchdowns to ANTHONY HINES (12 receptions for 139 yards). WILMONT PERRY added four rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats, who have dropped four straight games.
LOUISVILLE 36, Green Bay 18 (Attendance: 8,383): The Fire (5-10) held the Blizzard (2-12) scoreless through the first half of play on its way to its second win in a row. QB POOKIE JONES completed 18-of-22 passes for 228 yards and two scores with no interceptions for the Fire. He also rushed for a touchdown. TORREY DAY led all receivers with seven catches for 86 yards and one touchdown for the Fire.
Arkansas 38, MEMPHIS 28 (Attendance: 5,128): Trailing by two points, the Twisters (8-6) rallied for 20 fourth quarter points to come back and beat the Xplorers (5-9). The teams combined for only 237 yards of total offense and Arkansas QB RICKY HEBERT didn't throw a single touchdown. TONY EUBANKS' 35-yard interception return for a touchdown put the Twisters up by 11 early in the fourth quarter. The Twisters intercepted four passes on the night, including two by KAHLIL CARTER.
Cincinnati 54, PEORIA 39 (Attendance: 5,396): CHARLIE PETERSON hooked up with Game MVP JACK WALKER five times for 101 yards and five touchdowns, but it wasn't enough for the Pirates (4-10) against the Swarm (6-8). Cincinnati QB ANDY SAHN tossed five touchdowns, including two to JAMES SCOTT. ANTHONY PAYTON caught nine passes for 75 yards and one touchdown along with rushing for a score to help the Swarm keep its playoff hopes alive for another week.
QUAD CITY 69, San Diego 36 (Attendance: 6,471): QB TONY ZIMMERMAN passed for 288 yards and eight touchdowns as the Steamwheelers (12-2) downed the Riptide (5-9) and won their 12th straight game. IRA GOOCH, Game MVP, caught seven passes for 107 yards and four touchdowns and teammate TIM DODGE added five receptions for 110 yards and two scores. JEFF HEWITT (5 catches for 64 yards) also had two touchdowns. ASA FRANCIS recorded two sacks, increasing his league-leading total to 11.5.
TENNESSEE VALLEY 41, Florida 36 (Attendance: 6,304): Game MVP RONNEY DANIELS grabbed seven receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns as the Vipers (14-0) snapped the Firecats' (8-6) four-game win streak. REGGIE WORTHY (5 receptions for 81 yards) and JERRIAN JAMES (5 receptions for 80 yards) each contributed with a touchdown for the Vipers. Florida QB KEN MASTROLE tossed four touchdowns, including two to MAGIC BENTON.
TULSA 48, Hawaii 47 (Attendance: 5,568): MITCH ALLNER hauled in a 35-yard touchdown from CRAIG STRICKLAND with 36 seconds left to play as the Talons (11-3) had to come from behind to beat the Islanders (9-5). Allner totaled five catches for 61 yards and two scores, while teammate AL HUNT grabbed eight balls for 86 yards and two scores. Hawaii QB DARNELL ARCENEAUX completed 11-of-25 passes for 184 yards and five touchdowns in his first game back from injury. The Islanders defense held Tulsa to 178 yards of total offense.
BAKERSFIELD 56, Wichita 40 (Attendance: 5,131): RYAN SLOTH (Game MVP) caught five passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns as the Blitz (7-7) dropped the Stealth (8-6) and improved to .500 for the first time this season. QB CHAD ELLIOTT completed 17-of-30 for 204 yards and five touchdowns for the Blitz. Wichita's SHOMARI BUCHANAN caught 10 passes for 136 yards and four touchdowns for the Stealth. The Blitz has won six of its last seven games.
