Lexington Legends News Release
Savannah pitcher Robert Carson fired a three-hit shutout as the Sand Gnats beat the Lexington Legends 8-0 at Applebee's Park Saturday night to gain a split of the four-game series.
Carson (7-6) struck out eight, walked one, and allowed three singles -- to Chris Jackson in the fourth inning, Andy Simunic in the sixth, and Freddie Hernandez in the eighth. Carson's gem was the second nine-inning shutout in the South Atlantic League in 2009, and both took place at Applebee's Park. Lexington's Ross Seaton, Carson's pitching opponent Saturday night, shut out Augusta on three hits June 1.
Jefry Marte hit a solo homer in the top of the first to give the Sand Gnats the lead. The 1-0 score held up until the top of the sixth. Josh Satin and Sean Ratliff started the inning with singles, but Jordan Abruzzo grounded into a force play at third, and Eric Campbell lined out to center. The runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Lexington third baseman Ebert Rosario was unable to field Kai Gronauer's grounder, and the error allowed Ratliff to score from third. Evan LeBlanc then singled, bringing home Abruzzo to make the score 3-0. Imbewer Alvarez followed with a two-run double to give Savannah a 5-0 lead. The Sand Gnats added one run in the seventh on an RBI single by Ratliff and two more in the eighth on an RBI single by Marte and Ratliff's sacrifice fly.
Seaton (6-7) was the losing pitcher. He pitched six innings, and gave up five runs, but only one was earned -- the first-inning homer by Marte.
The Legends begin a four-game series at Delmarva Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
