Florence RedWolves News Release
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - Former Florence RedWolves outfielder David Sappelt made his major league debut Sunday afternoon for the Cincinnati Reds. He went 1-for-5 with a run scored in the Reds 8-7 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Sappelt got the call to join the big club after the Reds placed Chris Heisey on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.
With his debut, Sappelt became the 46th former CPL alum to turn major leaguer, and the ninth former Florence alum. Even more impressive is that he is the seventh CPL alum to debut in 2011.
Sappelt, who played his college ball at Coastal Carolina, spent the 2006 summer in Florence, where he batted .252 with 34 hits. He was second on the team with nine doubles and added a pair of triples, while scoring 18 runs and tallying 11 RBIs. On the season, he also racked up 47 total bases and recorded 10 stolen bases.
A ninth round draft pick by Cincinnati in 2008, Sappelt started his professional career off in Rookie ball before moving to Single-A Dayton in 2009, where he batted .269 through 74 games. Before long, he was called up to High-A Sarasota, and would spend 81 games at that level before climbing to Double-A Carolina in 2010. While with the Mudcats, Sappelt batted .361 with 62 RBIs - numbers that earned him a trip to Triple-A Louisville before the season was over.
Sappelt earned a trip to spring training in 2011, where he hit .564 with five doubles, three homers and five RBIs. But the Reds opted to send him back to the Bats, where he spent the entire season, playing in 73 games and batting .317 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs before getting called up to join Cincinnati.
