Santa Cruz Warriors Defeat Mad Ants in First Game of Playoffs

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Santa Cruz Warriors started their playoff campaign with a 124-118 win over the fifth-seeded Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the first game of the first round of the NBA D-League playoffs.

Santa Cruz was led by Jeremy Tyler, who scored a Warriors season-best 34 points and went 12-for-15 from the free throw line. Stefhon Hannah scored 23 points and dished out six assists, while Cameron Jones chipped in with 15 points.

Fort Wayne was paced by Tony Mitchell, who exploded for a game-high 40 points. Ron Howard scored 22 off the bench, while Anthony Harris had a game-high nine assists.

There were 13 lead changes in the game. Santa Cruz and Fort Wayne scored a combined 73 first quarter points, with the Warriors taking a 38-35 lead against the Mad Ants into the second quarter. Fort Wayne held its largest lead of three with 10:47 left in the first half, but the Warriors went on a 10-0 run and ended the half ahead by nine. Santa Cruz extended its lead to as much as 17 in the third, but the Mad Ants came racing back and pulled within one to start the final frame. After trading buckets and the lead for the first four and a half minutes of the fourth, the Warriors started to distance themselves from Fort Wayne, thanks to 21 fourth quarter points from Jeremy Tyler.

Santa Cruz shot 54.1% from the field compared to the Mad Ants' 50.0%. The Mad Ants won the rebound battle (41-38) and handed out more assists (25-22), but Santa Cruz held the edge on points in the paint (66-62) and steals (12-8). The Warriors committed fewer turnovers than Fort Wayne (16-15).
