San Jose Suffers 6-3 Loss To JetHawks

Lancaster's Michael Jones hit a three-run homer in the third inning to break a scoreless tie and the JetHawks never looked back in posting a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Sunday evening in front of 4,014 fans at Municipal Stadium. The Giants plated a single run in the eighth inning before scoring twice with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but their rally fell short as Lancaster evened the series at a game apiece. With the defeat, San Jose's overall record dropped to 84-55 with only one game remaining in the regular season.

Waldis Joaquin (0-1) was saddled with his first loss since joining the Giants after surrendering three runs on five hits during the first three innings. Joaquin struck out six, but also walked three and allowed the third-inning home run to Jones.

Kris Negron began the third-inning rally for Lancaster when he doubled off the fence in left field with one out. After Daniel Nava drew a walk, Jon Still struck out. Jones then stepped to the plate and crushed a 1-0 pitch from Joaquin over the wall in deep left center field for a home run. The homer, Jones' sixth this season, gave the JetHawks a 3-0 advantage.

Travis Beazley started on the mound for Lancaster and worked three scoreless innings before he was removed from the game for reaching his pitch count limit. Beazley allowed two hits, walked none and struck out two.

Derrick Loop entered the contest to begin the bottom of the fourth and did not allow a run until the eighth inning. The Giants recorded leadoff singles in the fifth and sixth innings, but Sharlon Schoop was promptly thrown out trying to steal in the fifth before Tyler Graham was picked-off by Loop in the next frame.

Still trailing by a 3-0 margin, San Jose finally pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Darren Ford led off by drawing a walk before Tyler Graham blooped a single into center field. After Mike McBryde grounded into a fielder's choice to force out Graham, Brad Boyer bounced into a fielder's choice to second base plating Ford to bring the Giants to within two runs.

Lancaster though reclaimed the momentum with three runs in the top of the ninth against San Jose reliever Daniel Turpen. Three consecutive singles from Zak Farkes, Aaron Reza and Reid Engel to start the inning produced one run. A second run scored on Engel's hit when Boyer threw wildly to home plate for an error. Three batters later, Nava singled home another run for a 6-1 JetHawks lead.

The Giants rallied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and even got the potential tying run to the plate, but still fell short. Andy D'Alessio led off with a single before Bobby Felmy walked to put runners on first and second. Lancaster reliever Jason Blackey set down the next two hitters, but then Ford singled sharply into left field to load the bases. Graham followed with a line drive double over the ahead of the first baseman Jones to score both D'Alessio and Felmy and bring the tying run to the plate. However, Blackey recovered to retire McBryde on a routine ground out to shortstop ending the comeback bid.

Loop (6-0) earned the victory after yielding one run on four hits over five innings of long relief. The left-hander struck out four and walked one.

Graham (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) led the nine-hit San Jose offensive attack. McBryde (2-for-5, 3B) and Schoop (2-for-4) also finished with more than one hit.

Giants reliever Juan Trinidad, who relieved Joaquin to begin the top of the fourth, fired three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Trinidad allowed just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts during his stint on the mound. Mike Musgrave (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) followed with a perfect top of the seventh before Turpen (2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) held the JetHawks off the scoreboard in the eighth.

Notes: San Jose finished August with an 18-11 record ... The 18 wins matches the most in a month for the club (April and May) ... The Giants have posted a winning record in all five months this year ... Lancaster has won seven out of eight meetings between the teams this season ... Trinidad lowered his ERA to 1.53 over 43 relief appearances this year ... The JetHawks out-hit the Giants by a 10-9 margin ... McBryde threw out Jason Place at home on a Still single in the first inning for his league-leading 20th outfield assist of the season ... San Jose honored Tim Alderson and Kevin Pucetas as their co-Pitchers of the Year in a ceremony before the game ... Sunday marked San Jose's seventh home game this season with the attendance above 4,000.

On Deck: The Giants conclude the regular season on Monday afternoon when they host the Lancaster JetHawks at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Daryl Maday (3-0, 1.59 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Lancaster is expected to counter with Felix Doubront (1-1, 4.00 ERA).
