Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA- For the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and the Inland Empire 66ers, 140 regular season games are not enough to decide the final California League playoff spot. After Rancho defeated the 66ers 5-3 in the final game of the regular season Monday night at the Epicenter, the two teams need one more game.
Sean O'Sullivan fought through eight innings to get the win and Rancho hitters provided just enough run support for the Quakes to pull out the victory and force a one game playoff Tuesday at Inland Empire.
Once again the Quakes scored in the first inning against the 66ers, this time Rancho scored two runs off of starter Steve Johnson. Rancho strung together five singles in the inning with the first run coming on a RBI single from Efren Navarro, followed by a run-scoring single by Larry Infante.
In the bottom of the third inning with Ryan Mount on second base after a one out double, Drew Toussaint homered to right field pushing Rancho's lead to 4-0.
Quakes starter Sean O'Sullivan cruised through the first three innings, but gave up two runs in the top of the fourth inning as Inland Empire narrowed Rancho's lead to 4-2. O'Sullivan yielded a one-out walk to Tommy Giles and a single to Drew Locke, setting the table for Matt Berezay who singled home Giles. With Locke on third base, Jaime Pedroza grounded out to first base scoring Locke for the second run of the inning.
Matt Berezay struck again for the 66ers, this time in the sixth inning with home run to right field off of O'Sullivan which narrowed the Quakes lead to 4-3. Rancho got the run back in the bottom of the inning pushing the lead back to two runs at 5-3, which would end up being the final score.
With a two run lead in the ninth inning, Ryan Brasier closed out the game for the Quakes giving O'Sullivan his 16th victory of the season.
Rancho pounded out 15 hits in the game highlighted by Abel Nieves who went 4-for-5, Peter Bourjos finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Drew Toussaint went 2-for-4 on the night with a home run and a double.
The Quakes travel to Inland Empire Tuesday at 7:05 and will send Jordan Walden (5-2. 3.95 ERA) to the mound to face Alberto Bastardo (5-8, 5.29 ERA) in a "winner take all" one game playoff.
