Grieb set a team record and career-high with 10 scoring passes, including the 600th of his illustrious career, and San Jose's swarming defense collected three sacks and a safety in the win. The SaberCats continue to hold the top seed in the American Conference playoff race and control their own destiny for home-field advantage in the postseason. FSN Bay Area will show the game as part of the AFL's regional TV package tape-delayed at 12:00 am on Sunday, Jun. 17. San Jose's flagship radio station KNBR 1050 will broadcast live. The SaberCats and Rattlers will be meeting for the 31st time, making it the second-longest rivalry in the AFL behind only the Tampa Bay/Orlando "War on I-4" series. San Jose defeated Arizona, 56-49, earlier this season in Phoenix for its 4th straight win in the series and is undefeated (6-0) against division opponents this year. The SaberCats have won 13 straight regular season home games and can become the first American Conference team to go undefeated at home since the 16-game season was adopted in 2003.

LAST SERIES MEETING:
SaberCats Post 4th Straight Win Over Arizona, 56-49
San Jose Maintains Division Lead
PHOENIX, Ariz. (May 5, 2007) - Mark Grieb threw seven touchdown passes and ran for another lifting the San Jose SaberCats (6-3) to their third straight win with a 56-49 decision over the Arizona Rattlers in an Arena Football League game Saturday night. Grieb, who completed 25-of-35 for 306 yards, connected with James Roe on a 13 yard scoring play on the game's first possession and, following a Clevan Thomas interception, teamed with Ben Nelson on a 12 yard touchdown pass giving San Jose a 14-0 first quarter lead. San Jose maintained its two touchdown lead throughout the contest and never trailed in winning its fourth straight over the Rattlers. Arizona (2-8) was led by veteran quarterback Sherdrick Bonner, who overcame a shaky start to finish 22-of-37 passing for 252 yards and six touchdowns, three to back-up receiver and former SaberCat Atnaf Harris. He also tossed an interception and was sacked for just the second time this season. Roe had a game-high 128 receiving yards and four touchdowns on eight catches while Nelson scored three times on seven receptions with 103 yards. Jason Geathers had a career-high 10 receptions. Defensive end Ron Jones tallied his 6th sack of the season and just the second of Bonner this season. He now has three sacks in the last two games and he helped San Jose limit Arizona to just 245 yards of offense. The SaberCats scored a touchdown on each of their first eight possessions and totaled 301 yards of offense to snap a 3-game road losing streak.

THE COACHES
San Jose - Darren Arbet, 9th season
94-40 (.701) reg. season; 104-45 (.698) overall
15-7 (.682) career vs. Arizona
4-0 (1.000) career vs. Gene Nudo
Two-time Arena Football League Coach of the Year and ArenaBowl champion Darren Arbet enters his ninth season as head coach of the San Jose SaberCats and his second as the club's general manager. Last season Arbet guided the SaberCats to their seventh straight winning season and playoff appearance by going 10-6, the sixth time in his eight seasons the team has posted a double-digit regular season win total. The team also captured its fifth Western Division title under Arbet (sixth overall) and advanced to the semifinal round of the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Arbet has compiled the third-best postseason winning percentage (.667) and is one of just six head coaches in league history to amass 10 playoff victories. Under the direction of Arbet San Jose has enjoyed unmatched success vaulting the franchise to elite status in the AFL. Since the start of the 2000 season, Arbet's second as head coach, the SaberCats have claimed two ArenaBowl championships (2002, 2004), compiled the most regular season wins (80), the second-most playoff wins (10) and have averaged nearly 12 victories a season. In addition, the club has set league records for regular season wins in a season (13 in 2002), overall wins in a season (16 in 2002), consecutive regular season wins in a season (12 in 2002), regular season wins to end a season (11 in 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 in 2000-01). Arbet's ties to the AFL date back to the late 1980s when he played two seasons as a fullback/linebacker with the Los Angeles Cobras (1988) and Maryland Commandos (1989) before a wrist injury that required three surgeries ended his career. During his playing days, Arbet lined up against former Philadelphia head coach Michael Trigg, who was a quarterback with the Detroit Drive, and Georgia Force offensive coordinator Steve Thonn, who played WR/DB with the Chicago Bruisers.
Arizona - Gene Nudo, 2nd season
12-19 (.387) reg. season; 13-20 (.394) overall
0-4 (.000) career vs. San Jose
0-4 (.000) career vs. Darren Arbet
Gene Nudo is celebrating his 13th season with the Arizona Rattlers and second as the team's head coach. In his first year at the helm, Nudo led the Rattlers to their 13th playoff appearance and the American Conference Semifinal after a Wild Card Round playoff victory. Nudo joined the Rattlers as an assistant head coach in 1995 after serving as the Arena Football League's vice president of Football Operations. He became the team's vice president of Administration the following season and also served as vice president of Operations for eight seasons before becoming general manager in 2004. While overseeing day-to-day football operations, Nudo helped the Rattlers earn five consecutive commissioner awards for the AFL's "Best Organization" (1996-2000), while earning an unprecedented three "Executive of the Year" awards (1997, 1999, 2000). Formerly a member of the AFL Board of Directors Executive Committee, Nudo has also served as the chairman of the AFL's Rules and Competition Committee and as a member of the league's Labor Relations Committee. Nudo is currently the chairman of the rules and competition subcommittee. He was instrumental in helping the AFL and its players enter into an interim collective bargaining agreement in 2000. Nudo began his coaching career in 1981 as head coach of the River Grove Cowboys of Chicago's Metropolitan Football League where he won five championships in six seasons, including the 1984 AFA Semi-Professional National Championship in Mobile, Ala. He also coached Chicago's Driscoll Catholic High School to an undefeated 1991 Illinois State High School Championship.

SABERCATS TOP BLAZE, 70-49, FOR 8th STRAIGHT WIN
Grieb Sets Franchise Record With 10 TD Passes
SALT LAKE CITY (June 9, 2007) - Mark Grieb tossed a franchise record and career-high 10 touchdown passes, including the 600th of his career, leading the San Jose SaberCats to their 8th straight win with a 70-49 decision over the Utah Blaze in an Arena Football League game. Five different players caught a scoring pass from Grieb, who completed 26 of 39 attempts for 249 yards without an interception. His 7-yard scoring toss to James Roe four minutes into the game gave San Jose (11-3) a 7-0 lead and the SaberCats never trailed in beating the Blaze (7-8) for a third straight time. Joe Germaine found Tom Pace on a 29-yard scoring play early in the second quarter pulling the Blaze within 20-14. But the SaberCats would score the final 23 points of the half to take a 43-14 lead at the break. Scoring passes to George Williams, who had two on the game, Roe and Cleannord Saintil combined with an Alan Harper safety when he sacked Germaine in the endzone provided San Jose with its halftime cushion. In an attempt to gain possessions and get back in the game, the Blaze were forced to attempt onside kicks and the strategy backfired when San Jose scored four times with a short field off the failed attempts. Germaine completed 23 of 36 for 285 yards with 5 touchdowns, including his 100th of the season midway through the third quarter. Siaha Burley had 10 catches for 103 yards setting single-season AFL records for receptions (155) and yards (1,996).
TRENDS
HOME SWEET HOME - The SaberCats bring a perfect home record this season into Saturday's matchup with Arizona. San Jose improved to 7-0 at HP Pavilion this year with a 59-52 win over Orlando on Jun. 1, and stretched its regular season home winning streak to 13, the 2nd longest regular season unbeaten streak in team history. San Jose won 14 consecutive regular season home games from June 16, 2001 to Mar. 28, 2003. San Jose also upped its record to 70-24 (.745) in regular season home games and 79-28 (.738) overall in games at HP Pavilion. Under head coach Darren Arbet the SaberCats improved to 56-11 (.836) in regular season home games. San Jose's last regular season home loss was to Los Angeles, 75-61, on Mar. 12, 2006.
HOW THE WEST IS WON - The SaberCats end the season with a pair of games against Western Division opponents and play their final regular season home game Saturday against Arizona. San Jose's 70-49 win at Utah on Jun. 9 improved its season record against division foes to 6-0, and including their playoff win over Arizona last season the SaberCats have won 10 straight games against Western Division competition. San Jose has an all-time regular season record of 47-26 (.644) against Western Division teams and is 27-11 (.711) at home. The SaberCats have never gone an entire season without losing a game to a division opponent and close the regular season against Arizona and Las Vegas, who combined are 6-23.
PICKIN IT - After intercepting just 4 passes in the first six games of the year, the SaberCats have totaled 14 INTs over the last eight games and have pilfered at least one pass in each game during their current winning streak outpicking the opposition 14 to 4 over the last 8 games. Clevan Thomas kept the streak alive with his team-high 7th of the year and 39th of his career at Utah on Jun. 9. Marquis Floyd (6), Omarr Smith (4) and Trestin George (1) have supplied the remaining INTs. With 18 picks on the year the SaberCats are tied with the 5th most in the AFL.
STREAKING - San Jose matched the Chicago Rush for the longest win streak in the AFL this season at 8 following a 70-49 win over the Utah Blaze on Jun. 9. The Rush rattled off 8 straight wins following a season-opening loss. The 8-game streaks are the longest in the AFL since the Arizona Rattlers ended the 2004 season winning their final 8 regular season games. San Jose beat Arizona, 69-62, in ArenaBowl XVIII that year. San Jose's current run is the 3rd longest single-season win streak in team history. The franchise record for consecutive wins in a season is 12, also an AFL record, accomplished in 2002. The team also has an 11-game streak (2001).
THE UNBEATEN - With a win Saturday the SaberCats would become the first American Conference team to have an unbeaten home record since the AFL went to a 16-game schedule in 2003. Georgia and Tampa Bay are the only two teams to go 8-0 at home, doing it in 2005. Georgia and Dallas, along with San Jose, are 7-0 at home this season.
ON THE MARK - Mark Grieb improved his regular season record as San Jose's starting QB to 82-29 (.739) and remained perfect at 15-0 during the month of June with San Jose's win at Utah on Jun. 9. During his SaberCats career Grieb has started 57 regular season games in HP Pavilion and owns a 50-7 (.877) record. He is 10-5 during the regular season against Arizona and 13-6 overall.
SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT - The SaberCats have gotten used to playing on Saturday nights. They'll take a 7-game Saturday winning streak into their game against Arizona on Jun. 16. San Jose lost its first Saturday contest of the season falling at Georgia on Mar. 24, but has failed to lose since then. All time the club is 64-25 (.719) when playing on a Saturday.
TASTES LIKE CHICKEN - The SaberCats/Rattlers rivalry has been a tale of two halves. San Jose has enjoyed the most recent success winning 10 of the last 15 games of the 30-game series, including the last four, and outscoring Arizona 795-723. The Rattlers enjoyed early success posting 9 wins in the first 15 games with a 761 to 684 scoring advantage. Arizona actually had a 9-2 series edge through the first 11 series games. San Jose's current win streak is the 2nd longest in the series matching Arizona's 4-game run from May 24, 1997 to Jun. 6, 1998. The SaberCats won five straight series games from Jun. 1, 2000 to Apr. 20, 2002.
THE VOODOO HEX - Things have spiraled in opposite directions for San Jose and New Orleans since the teams played in the Crescent City on Friday the 13th (of April). The VooDoo beat the SaberCats that day, 64-57, but hasn't won since, losing 7 straight games. The SaberCats, on the other hand, haven't lost since that game and are riding an 8-game winning streak.
DOWN & OUT - The SaberCats top the circuit in opponents 3rd down percentage allowing just a 38.5 percent (37 of 96) conversion rate. At home the SaberCats are even better. In their 7 home games San Jose has allowed opponents to convert on 3rd down just 30.2 percent of the time (13 of 43). During their current 8-game winning streak opponents are converting at a 36 percent clip (18 of 50).
TAKETH AWAY - Clevan Thomas' INT was the only turnover by either side in the SaberCats 70-49 win at Utah on Jun. 9. The takeaway by San Jose increased its season total 34, the 2nd most in the AFL this season and tied for the 3rd most in team history. San Jose has 18 INTs and has recovered 16 fumbles on the year and sits 4 takeaways behind Chicago, who leads the AFL with 38. Over their current 8-game win streak the SaberCats have forced 26 turnovers and are +17 in turnover margin. The SaberCats rank 3rd overall in the AFL this season with a +14 turnover margin. The 1998 SaberCats set the franchise record with 41 takeaways.
JUNE BUGGIN - San Jose's 70-49 win at Utah on Jun. 9 was the team's 10th straight regular season victory during the sixth month of the year and 15th win in its last 16 June games. Prior to this season the SaberCats hadn't played a regular season game in the month of June since the 2002 season, but they now own a 26-11 (.703) regular season record during the month.
THAT 70's SHOW - The SaberCats reached the 70-point mark in a game for the 3rd time this season and the 26th time in their history in their 70-49 win at Utah on Jun. 9. With the win San Jose increased its record to 25-1 (.962) when scoring 70 or more points in a game. The SaberCats had a franchise record five 70+ point games in 2003 and 24 of the 26 games with 70 or more points have come since the 2000 campaign.
NOTES
JUST WIN - The SaberCats raised their season record to 11-3 with their 70-49 win at Utah on Jun. 9, the 4th highest single-season win total in team history. San Jose won a franchise-best and league record 13 games in 2002 and posted 12 wins in 2000 and 2003. San Jose's 7 seasons with 10 or more regular season wins matched Tampa Bay for the second-most, one behind both Orlando and Arizona. All seven of San Jose's 10+ win seasons have come since the 2000 campaign and the SaberCats have the league's best regular season record over that span at 88-32.

TITLE TOWN - The SaberCats clinched their 2nd straight Western Division title and 7th overall with their 59-52 win over Orlando on Jun. 1 and own the most division crowns of any team since the AFL went to a 4-division format 13 seasons ago in 1995. Arizona, Tampa Bay and the defunct Albany Firebirds each own five titles while Orlando and Iowa have four each. The 2007 Eastern Division champion Dallas Desperados captured their 2nd straight and 3rd overall and the 2007 Southern Division champion Georgia Force won a second title. We are still waiting to see who wins the Central Division with Chicago, Colorado and Kansas City all in the hunt. The AFL's tie-break format was used to determine division winners in case of a first-place tie.
GETTING GRIEBY - Mark Grieb became the 5th player in the history of the AFL to throw 600 career TD passes (608) when he tossed a team record and career-high 10 in a 70-49 win at Utah on Jun. 9. Grieb is also closing in on a mark that only four QBs in any professional football league have ever accomplished. With a team season record 93 passing scores, Grieb needs 7 to become the 5th player ever to throw for 100 or more TDs in a season. His 10 TDs against Utah broke his own team record of 9, which he accomplished three times. Grieb also eclipsed the 2,500-completion barrier for his career after the 16th completion on the night. He now has 2,510 in his illustrious career. Utah's Joe Germaine eclipsed the 100-TD mark in the Jun. 9 game and Georgia's Chris Greisen also topped triple-digits last week. Dallas' Clint Dolezel owns the AFL record with 106 TD passes in 2005 and is on the verge of joining Aaron Garcia as the only players to do it twice. Dolezel enters play this week with 95 TD passes.

MR. ROE-BOTO - James Roe is having the best year of his SaberCat career in 2007. At Utah on June 9, "The Difference" led San Jose in receiving by catching 9 balls for 130 yards and 3 TDs. It's the second straight game Roe has registered 130 receiving yards and 3 TDs. Already the team's leader in virtually every receiving category, Roe is on the verge of establishing new team single-season bests in receptions, receiving yards and TD catches. His 3 TDs at Utah put him at 35 on the season, matching James Hundon's 2002 franchise record. Barring a setback, Roe should set the new records with 2 games. He needs 59 yards to eclipse Hundon's 2002 record of 1,464, and only lacks 2 catches to break his own reception total of 116 set in 2005. In the absence of WR Ben Nelson from the receiving corps during the last 4 games, Roe has stepped up, amassing 524 yards and 9 TDs on 38 catches. His TD (35), reception (115), and yardage (1,406) totals for the season are 6th best in the AFL.

MOVIN' ON UP - DB Clevan Thomas moved within one interception of becoming the 8th player in AFL history with 40 career INTs and tying Austin's Damon Mason for 7th place on the AFL's career list. Thomas snared his 39th career pick in San Jose's 70-49 win at Utah on Jun. 9 and is just 3 picks shy of the 5th spot. Only 11 INTs separate Thomas from the 2nd slot - Kansas City's Kenny McEntyre holds the record with 77 in his career. Thomas is the SaberCats' team leader with 7 INTs on the season while DBs Marquis Floyd (6), Omarr Smith (4) and Trestin George (1) add to the team total of 18.

CASE OF THE RUNS - In his second game back from injury and the 80th of his AFL career, SaberCats' FB Matt Kinsinger ran the ball 3 times for 27 yards, his 3rd highest game total and the most since the 2003 season, sealing the 70-49 victory against Utah in the final frame of the contest. With the 27 yards, Kinsinger inched closer to Derrick Chachere's team career rushing yards record. Kinsinger now has 428 yards in his San Jose career, leaving him 15 yards shy of eclipsing Chachere's mark. Kinsinger also got a few attempts closer to gaining the 2nd place spot on the team's rush attempts list. With 140 career attempts, he needs 6 carries to surpass Steve Papin (140) for 2nd place and stands 15 rushes short of the career leader, Derrick Chachere (154). For his entire 7-year career, Kinsinger has rushed for 479 yards leaving him just 21 away from 500.

SAFETY DANCE - DL Alan Harper recorded the SaberCats first safety of the 2007 season on Jun. 9 against the Utah Blaze when he sacked QB Joe Germaine in the endzone with 1:20 left in the 2nd quarter giving San Jose a 36-14 lead. San Jose scored on the ensuing possession and took a commanding 43-14 halftime lead in an eventual 70-49 win. The safety was the team's first since Charles Pauley recorded the 2-point defensive score on Apr. 7, 2006 at Tampa Bay. The play was also part of a career defensive night for the starting DE. Harper tallied his 1st career QB sack and totaled 2.5 for the game, tying the team record set by Sam Hernandez back in 2000 against Houston. Harper's sacks, 2.5 tackles and 1st career safety were enough to earn him Defensive Player of the Game honors.
KICKING BUTT - While San Jose kicker A.J. Haglund has been efficient in kick scoring this season, he has also provided an enormous boost on the special teams unit as a defender. At Utah on Jun. 9, Haglund recorded 1.5 tackles during kickoffs, bringing his total for the year to 13.0, leaving him an assisted tackle shy of tying Dan Frantz' 2005 team record for kickers of 13.5. On the kicking side, Haglund made 8 PATs elevating his total to 109 on the season - the most of any kicker in the league. The rookie needs 1 more PAT to set a team single season record and is just 9 short of the AFL season record of 117 set by Dallas' Carlos Martinez in 2006. Haglund also executed a perfect onside kick in the 2nd quarter, the 3rd successful onside attempt this season.
BY GEORGE! - "The Big Sexy" was at the top of his offensive game last Saturday at EnergySolutions Arena in Utah as he recorded his 4th and 5th TD receptions of the season. Williams has caught 5 passes this year for 16 yards and all 5 have been snatched in the redzone. Williams has accounted for 3 TD catches during the last two games - he had a 1-yard grab against Orlando on June 1. He got two TD receptions in the game at Chicago on Mar. 9. With his performance against the Blaze, Williams has set the season record for most TD catches by a SaberCats lineman with 5 - the previous mark (3) was held by Al Noga in 1996. This was Williams's 6th career TD grab setting the record for the most ever by a San Jose lineman. Williams played in his 70th career AFL game and notched his 50th career solo tackle to earn Ironman of the Game recognition. In San Jose's 13-year history, nine linemen have caught a total of 18 TD passes with Julius Gant (1) and Garrett McIntyre (1) combining with Williams for seven in 2007.

ARIZONA PLAYERS TO WATCH
QB SHERDRICK BONNER - The most tenured quarterback to have ever played the indoor game, Bonner is in his 15th and perhaps final season in the Arena Football League. Earlier this year, Bonner became the third professional football QB to throw more than 800 TD passes in his career - he currently has 829. He has the 5th most passing TDs (83) in 2007 and his QB rating of 117.4 ranks 9th best in the league. Bonner's passing average (288.3 ypg), pass attempts (498) and passing yards (4,036) all rank in the top five among league leaders. The SaberCats have matched up against Bonner more than any other QB in the AFL. In 26 career games against San Jose, the Cal-State Northridge grad has thrown for 6,281 yards and 125 TDs while completing 490-of-822 passes. He has thrown for 300 or more yards in 7 contests and has only been picked off by the SaberCats 15 times. In the teams' first meeting this season on May 5, Bonner completed 22 passes for 242 yards and 6 TDs with one INT in a 56-49 losing effort.
DL WENDALL GAINES - The 6-5, 290-pound athlete out of Oklahoma State is in his eighth AFL season, all with Arizona, and was selected to the league's All-Ironman team in 2004. Gaines has been the backbone of the Rattlers offensive and defensive lines during his career, but has registered most of his time in 2007 on defense. In 14 games this year, he has accounted for 22.5 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, 5 PBUs, 3 FF, and 3 blocked kicks. Gaines has played in 10 career games versus the SaberCats, tallying 17.5 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 PBU, 1 FF and a blocked kick. In the May 5th contest in San Jose, Gaines pulled down QB Mark Grieb for an 8-yard loss and also forced a fumble while notching 4 tackles.
FB BO KELLY - The spearhead of the Rattlers ground game, Kelly has 12 years of AFL experience and has played all but one with Arizona. He holds all of Arizona's franchise rushing records and ranks in the top 5 in most rushing categories in 2007. Through 15 games, Kelly is 2nd in rushing attempts (81) and 4th in rushing yards (222) and rushing TDs (13). In his career versus the SaberCats, the former East Texas State players has racked up 98 rushing yards on 50 attempts (1.9 avg) with 8 touchdowns. He has also caught 7 passes for 76 yards and 3 TDs. In the SaberCats last game against the Rattlers on May 5, Kelly ran the ball 9 times for only 2 yards and a TD.
