Modesto Nuts News Release
SAN JOSE, CA (June 12th, 2013) -- Giants infielder Brock Bond hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th as San Jose was able to defeat Modesto, 5-3, on Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium.
After getting two quick outs, Nuts reliever Nelson Gonzalez (2-4) issued a walk to nine-hole hitter Bobby Haney to keep the 11th going. Bond, who spent the entire season in Triple-A last year with Fresno, followed with a game-winning two-run home run, his first of the year with San Jose, to end the game.
Giants reliever Josh Osich (2-1) picked up the win, retiring all six batters he faced in a rebound two inning effort. Osich was tagged for five runs (four earned) in Monday's extra-inning loss to Modesto.
Modesto struck first in the contest, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against Giants starter Clayton Blackburn. Ryan Casteel doubled home Brian Humphries with two outs in the inning, and Tyler Massey followed with an RBI single to get the Nuts out to an early advantage.
San Jose cut the deficit in half in the second against Modesto All-Star righty Chris Jensen, who gave up a solo home run to fellow All-Star Devin Harris, his 13th of the season. The Giants then took the lead in the fourth with a 2-run inning on an RBI triple by Jeff Arnold and a single by Myles Schroder.
Blackburn settled into the game, retiring 10 in a row at one point until the Nuts were able to tie it in the sixth. Trailing 3-2, Casteel belted his second home run of the series, and team-leading 13th of the season to even the score.
San Jose put two on with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Modesto escaped the inning as Chris Jensen induced a grounder to short from John Polonius, with Trevor Story fielding it at short and throwing to second for a force out. Jeff Arnold was then caught trying to score from third, as the Nuts got him in a run-down and tagged him out at the plate for a double play. Jensen would then give way to Kraig Sitton, who got Haney to fly out to finish off the inning.
Modesto would hold the Giants off the board for six innings until Bond hit the homer in the 11th. Sitton would get two more outs, before handing things over to Russell Brewer who retired five Giants hitters, including three via strikeout. Ken Roberts gave up a pair of consecutive singles in the 10th, but struck out Harris and got Arnold to groundout to send it to the 11th.
The Nuts had their best scoring chance against reliever Cody Hall in the ninth, putting two on with only one out, but Hall struck out Story and Brian Humphries to get out of trouble.
Modesto finished a seven game road trip with a 3-4 record, losing the four games by a combined six runs. San Jose shaved down their magic number to clinch the first-half North Division title to one. The Giants will play Visalia in a four-game series at Recreation Park this weekend, with the Rawhide needing a sweep to force a one-game playoff.
The Nuts (31-35) now return home to play the final four games of the first-half against the Bakersfield Blaze (26-40). RHP Ben Alsup (3-7, 4.71) will start for Modesto, opposite RHP Shane Dyer (0-0, 1.50) for the Blaze. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at John Thurman Field.
