San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes take on their second straight Western Conference opponent in their return home, hosting Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, April 7. Kickoff at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT. The match will air live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV (English) and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).
The Earthquakes (3-1-0, 9 pts.) are off to their best start since the 2003 squad (3-0-1, 10 pts.) that ultimately lifted the franchise's second MLS Cup. San Jose enters Saturday's match having won back-to-back road contests in shutout fashion, 3-0 at Toronto FC on March 24 and 1-0 at Seattle Sounders FC on March 31. The 'Caps (2-0-2, 8 pts.) are coming off consecutive scoreless draws at home against D.C. United on March 24 and at the Philadelphia Union on March 31.
San Jose sits in a tie for second-place in the West with the Colorado Rapids (3-1-0, 9 pts.), as Real Salt Lake (4-1-0, 12 pts.) occupies the top spot in the standings heading into the weekend. Vancouver is in fourth-place.
Saturday's game matches up the top two defenses in the Western Conference through four weeks of the 2012 MLS season. Vancouver is the only team in the league yet to concede a goal, with Joe Cannon minding the net. Cannon grew up in Los Altos Hills, graduated from Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, starred at Santa Clara University and had two separate stints with the Earthquakes, from 1999-02 and again from 2008-10. San Jose, meanwhile, has allowed just a single goal, that from the penalty spot in its lone defeat to Houston on March 17, as veteran goalkeeper Jon Busch has already kept three shutouts.
