Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth lost their first road game of the season to the San Jose Stealth 14-9 on Saturday night in San Jose, California. The loss puts the Mammoth record at 4-3 on the year, while the Stealth sits at 3-4.
Colorado forward Chris Gill (#25) set the tone early on for the Mammoth with two goals in the first quarter. Matt Leveque scored an unassisted goal and Brian Langtry followed with a power play goal of his own with less than a minute remaining in the quarter as the Mammoth led 4-2 after one period of play.
Langtry scored again just 1:15 into the second quarter to push the Mammoth advantage to 5-2, but San Jose, led by two Cam Sedgwick power play goals, came roaring back with six unanswered goals to close out the first half with an 8-5 lead.
Langtry's third goal of the night, a power play goal, early in the third frame was followed by a sweet behind-the-back netter by Jed Prossner as the Mammoth trimmed the Stealth lead to 8-7. But each time Colorado would get close, San Jose had an answer. Twice in the third quarter the Mammoth would come within a single goal of tying the game, only to have the Stealth answer. The home team would ultimately push the lead to four goals by the end of the third frame 12-8.
The fourth quarter, which has been owned by Colorado in its past four games, was an uneventful one for the Mammoth on this night. The lone bright spot for the visitors was a Chris Gill goal, giving him his first hat-trick of the season, with under two minutes remaining.
San Jose rookie, Rhys Duch tacked on two late-game goals to bring his final game total to seven points (three goals, four assists), and that would be the only scoring in the final frame. Colin Doyle's two goals and seven assists were supported by Jeff Zywicki's hat-trick and two assists while Cam Sedgwick added two goals and three assists on the night for the Steath.
In addition to the Gill and Langtry hat-tricks, Gavin Prout added five assists for the Mammoth while Jed Prossner and Jamie Shewchuck each added a goal and assist. Colorado outshot San Jose 52-45 on the night.
Also on Saturday, the Mammoth placed defenseman Chris Gill (#23) on the holdout list. The second year player has appeared in two games for Colorado this season totaling a goal and an assist while scooping up 14 loose balls. Ray Guze has replaced Gill on the Mammoth roster. He will meet up with the team in Edmonton tomorrow for the team's Sunday evening contest. The 6'2", 190 lb. Guze is a five-year veteran in the NLL. He appeared in 11 games for Portland last season, notching two goals, an assist and 22 loose balls for the LumberJax.
The Mammoth will be at Edmonton tomorrow - Sunday, February 22nd before returning to host All-Star Weekend on March 6th and 7th at Pepsi Center.
