San Diego Sockers News Release
SAN DIEGO - San Diego Sockers defender Shawn Beyer launched his Web site this week. Shawnbeyer.net provides an avenue for professional soccer fans to learn about the personal and professional sides of one of the hottest players on this year's team. The site offers insight into the athlete's on-field performance, off-field interests, includes information on his past experiences, describes his philanthropic involvement, gives soccer playing and coaching advice, shares dozens of Beyer¹s memories via family photos, and links to every major influence in his life.
"Shawn's Web site succeeds on many levels" according to web master Ron Logan. "The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) has a truly great product and we've seen other sports do a fantastic job of promoting athletes, and it's time that indoor soccer players get up to speed."
Beyer, a 28-year old from Hutchinson, Kansas, has three main objectives with his Web site.
"First of all, I want to give indoor soccer fans a window into my real life - to reveal what is important to me, what really makes me tick" says Beyer. "I feel it is important for the fans to relate to me as a fellow human being, not just as a professional athlete. By sharing truly personal aspects of my life, I feel like I allow my fans to understand me better. Conversely, I've put links on the site so the fans can contact me, so I can learn more about them."
The second objective for Beyer, and arguably his number one priority, is to use his professional soccer player notoriety as leverage to help support the charities he is most passionate about. "A few years ago, when I lived in Kansas, I volunteered as a Big Brother to Corey. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and now I have friend for life. And very recently my cousin Morgan in Santee was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes, and my aunt Sue suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. So, these causes are very close to my heart." Beyer hopes his Web site will help these organizations gain exposure.
Beyer's third objective is to help promote the game of indoor soccer. In 1983 he attended his first professional indoor soccer match and he has been hooked ever since. "It is a great game. It is fast-paced, end-to-end, tons of action, and is probably one of the most exciting spectator sports there is. The problem has been obtaining general market acceptance with the game. The San Diego market is tough with all the competition of other sports and the incredible weather, but I'm confident that if we could get new fans into the seats, they would become hooked."
Shawnbeyer.net is a great tool for Beyer, and as traffic to his site increases more people will gain the insight he shares. The site will be a work-in-progress, and will continue to evolve over time. "I feel very lucky to be where I am in all aspects of my life" says Beyer. "If I can share my personal fortune with other people, well, I can't ask for anything more."
