San Antonio Takes Series Behind Five-Run First Inning
April 24, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
A big first-inning rally turned out to be just enough as San Antonio held on for a series-clinching, 6-5 win over Midland Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
Missions starter Johnny Hellweg breezed through the top of the first Sunday, retiring the RockHounds in order.
In the bottom of the inning, Hellweg's mound opponent, Chris Jensen had the exact opposite experience. Jensen began his day by plunking Nelson Ward with a pitch. After getting Auston Bousfield to fly out to center, Jensen allowed a Nick Torres single. A throwing error on the play by Jaycob Brugman allowed the runners to advance to second and third. Jensen (1-2) then ran into more trouble by walking Mike Olt and then hitting Taylor Lindsey, giving San Antonio a 1-0 lead. Alberth Martinez pushed the lead to two when he followed with a sacrifice fly to left. That brought up Jose Rondon, who gave the Missions a 4-0 lead when he drilled a double down the right-field line. Catcher Ryan Miller capped the uprising with a double of his own.
Midland got two runs back off Hellweg in the top of the second courtesy of a Wade Kirkland sacrifice fly and a Brett Vertigan bunt single.
Hellweg (1-2) put up zeroes over the next three innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth when Beau Taylor's two-run double cut the Missions' lead to 6-4.
In the top of the eighth, the RockHounds inched closer, slicing their deficit to just one on a Franklin Barreto RBI single up the middle off reliever Brandon Alger. Jason Jester got the Missions out of further trouble by fanning Kirkland.
Jester came back out for the ninth, where he notched his third save of the season, and his first since returning from the DL (finger), with a perfect frame.
The victory was the club's third straight, a new season high.
San Antonio (8-8) begins an eight-game road trip Monday with the first of four against Frisco (11-4). First pitch from Dr Pepper Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Bryce Morrow (0-0, 0.00) will get the ball for the Missions in his first action of the 2016 season. The RoughRiders will start southpaw Frank Lopez (1-0, 4.11) in the opener.
Notes: For the second straight night Rondon (2-for-2, R) finished with three RBI (his most at AA-level).
