San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio FC (4-0-3) tied Austin Bold FC (2-0-3) 1-1 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. A late equalizer from forward Jose Gallegos earned the Alamo City club a point at home to remain at the top of Group D and undefeated during the 2020 USL Championship season.
"Austin is a very good team," said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. "They are well coached and an organized team. They dropped numbers behind the ball to make it difficult for us, but our guys fought for 95-plus minutes. They stuck together, they demonstrated their grit and I'm proud of our guys as we remain undefeated."
The Bold found the opening goal in the 39th minute when midfielder Xavier Baez buried a volley from inside the SAFC box for the 1-0 lead. SAFC outshot Austin 10-9 while outnumbering the club in duels won, possession, passing accuracy, corner kicks, shots and passes.
SAFC found the equalizer in stoppage time after a deflection from forward Ignacio Bailone found Gallegos at the top of the box, from where the San Antonio native fired low and to the left to beat goalkeeper Diego Restrepo. The goal marked Gallegos' first of the season and second for SAFC overall, while the assist marked Bailone's second for the club.
San Antonio FC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone recorded five saves on the night, posting an 83% save percentage while adding one claim in his second appearance of the 2020 season.
SAFC will return to USL Championship action on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. as the club hosts OKC Energy FC at Toyota Field for the first time this season.
