Austin Bold FC News Release
Austin, TX - Austin Bold FC and San Antonio FC shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Toyota Field. Midfielder Xavi Baez scored his first goal of 2020 with a powerful strike off the volley in the first half to put The Bold in the lead. San Antonio would find an equalizer in stoppage time with a Jose Gallegos goal to draw the match level. The Bold continue their five-match road trip this Wednesday in Tulsa against FC Tulsa. Despite having less possession in the early stages, Austin was able to limit the chances for the home side. SAFC's first shot on target was in the 17' by Gallegos, which was easily collected by goalkeeper Diego Restrepo to keep the match scoreless. Restrepo would make a fantastic fingertip save in the 30' to keep out Victor Giro off a freekick.
Baez scored his first goal of 2020 with a perfectly timed volley to smash the ball past SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone. Billy Forbes' cross in the box deflected off a San Antonio defender and looped towards an open Baez. The midfielder hit a right-footed volley to the bottom right corner to give Austin the lead.
The Bold defended well throughout the second half while creating dangerous chances. Sean McFarlane dribbled through the SAFC backline and went just over the crossbar in the 66', but it would be SAFC to find the back of the net. In the 90+2', the ball found its way to Gallegos at the top of the box from a corner. The midfielder snuck a right-footed shot through a crowded box to end the match 1-1.
Match Quotes
Baez on the team's performance.
"The team's performance was great, we continued to grow, and today we had a great game. Unfortunately, we could not finish with the victory, but we are on the right track. I'm proud of my team."
Baez on scoring his first goal in 2020.
"Personally, I'm very happy with the goal and to be able to help score points. We'll continue working very hard to improve our level of play. Our goal is to be in the top spots."
Head Coach Marcelo Serrano on Xavi Baez.
"Xavi is an important piece on the team; his ability to read the game and play with his skills is so special for us. Having a leader like him makes our team stronger."
Marcelo Serrano on competing against an established club like San Antonio FC.
"I believe, as a second-year franchise, we are still figuring out what we want to be as an organization. We have the ability as a team to win championships, so as soon as we have a directed north, we'll be a great franchise. San Antonio has been a professional institution for many years, and we are competing with them head to head now even with all the problems we had this week on player shortages. Last year we did better than SA going to the playoffs. This year they stepped up and are doing a great job so far."
