San Antonio FC News Release
PORTLAND, OR (Aug. 15, 2018) - San Antonio FC (9-7-7) fell 1-2 to Portland Timbers 2 (12-10-3) at Providence Park on Wednesday night. A goal from midfielder Omar Gordon was not enough to earn the Alamo City club any points on the night.
"We're a bit pinned back right now," San Antonio FC defender Cyprian Hedrick said. "We have a tough match coming up against Phoenix Rising FC next week, so we need to come up with a response and get ourselves back on the right track."
SAFC opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Gordon buried a free kick and beat goalkeeper Alex Mangels to earn the 1-0 lead. The goal marks Gordon's fifth of the season, tying him with forward Ever Guzman for the scoring lead so far this season.
The Timbers 2 then found an equalizer in the 42nd minute after forward Foster Langsorf found the end of a cross from teammate Lamar Batista and slotted it past SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone. The hosts scored the match-winning goal in the 54th minute when midfielder Renzo Zambrano took a shot from distance that was deflected off an SAFC player and into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
Cardone recorded six saves on the night, marking his highest tally in a single match this season after playing in three USL matches. Cardone jointly holds the club record for most saves in a single match (nine) with teammate Diego Restrepo.
San Antonio FC will return to USL action on Wednesday, August 22 as they take on Phoenix Rising FC on the road. The club will then return home on Saturday, August 25 as they host Swope Park Rangers at Toyota Field.
