TODAY'S NEWS
The 2019 San Antonio Commanders held its third of 22 Training Camp practices on Saturday at Central Catholic High School's Bob Benson '66 Stadium.
The practice started at 11:30 a.m. and finished shortly after 1:15 p.m. with the players wearing shells (helmets and shoulder pads).
Contact was kept at a minimal, but the occasional crack of the pads was heard.
The Commanders announced the addition of running back Henry Poggi.
Henry Poggi
A Baltimore, Md.., native, Poggi appeared in 44 games, making 17 starts (four at tight end and 13 at fullback), while also contributing on special teams in four seasons at the University of Michigan. He finished his career with two rushes for four yards and a touchdown along with nine receptions for 68 yards. The son of former Michigan special teams coach, Biff Poggi, he went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, but was signed to offseason workouts with the New England Patriots.
In other transactions, the Commanders placed DT Ashaad Mabry on the reserved/injured list via the waiver system.
Wide receiver Darius Prince came away with a one-handed catch on a crossing pattern over the middle. The catch elicited applause from the offensive players and a few 'how did he make that catch' from the defenders.
The first wave offensive line created a large hole for running back Kenneth Farrow II (Houston) on a run up the middle. Farrow II then made a safety miss and was headed toward the end zone.
Also in attendance in were nearly 50 football coaches from various colleges, including UTEP head coach Dana Dimel, each of whom is in San Antonio for the American Football Coaches Associations' annual convention.
NEW ANNOUNCEMENT: All practices for teams of The Alliance of American Football are now open to the general public. Fans are required to sit in the stands.
A member of The Alliance of American Football, the San Antonio Commanders have an experienced professional coaching and front office staff led by head coach Mike Riley, general manager Daryl Johnston and team president Vic Gregovits.
The Commanders compete in The Alliance of American Football with the Atlanta Legends, Arizona Hotshots, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, Orlando Apollos, Salt Lake Stallions and San Diego Fleet. The Commanders team name draws inspiration from San Antonio's Military City, USA nickname. From Bowie to Travis to the 39,000-plus who graduate each year from military training at Joint Base San Antonio, Commanders have called San Antonio home for more than 300 years.
The Commanders take their first snap on February 9 against the San Diego Fleet with home games being played at the Alamodome.
