San Antonio Commanders Score Late to Beat Salt Lake 19-15

SAN ANTONIO - Trey Williams' 36-yard touchdown reception and Greg Ward Jr.'s two-point conversion catch with less than six minutes remaining helped lift San Antonio (5-2) to a 19-15 victory over Salt Lake (2-5) on Saturday night in front of an Alliance-record 30,345 fans at the Alamodome.

Williams took a short pass from reserve quarterback Marquise Williams - who entered the game in the fourth quarter for injured starter Logan Woodside - sprinted down the right sideline and leaped into the end zone for the go-ahead score. Marquise Williams then found Ward Jr. for a successful two-point conversion to put San Antonio up 17-9 with 5:29 left to play.

On the ensuing possession, the Stallions drove 75 yards to make it a two-point contest after Terrell Newby's 21-yard TD reception from Josh Woodrum on the first play following the two-minute warning. Salt Lake had a chance to tie the score on the two-point try but De'Vante Bausby stepped in front of Woodrum's pass in the left flat and returned it untouched to make it 19-15.

Salt Lake (2-5) elected to not take an onside conversion and San Antonio got one first down and ran out the clock to ice the win and remain at the top of the Western Conference standings at 5-2.

Neither team could muster much offense in a game controlled by the defenses, as the Stallions outgained the Commanders, 263-240.

Salt Lake opened the scoring with a Taylor Bertolet field goal from 32 yards on the game's opening possession.

Woodside completed a 21-yard pass caught over the shoulder in the corner of the end zone by Mekale McKay to get the Commanders on the board with 4:42 left in first quarter, but Bertolet drilled a 53-yard field goal early in the second stanza to knot the score at 6-6.

The Commanders took a three-point lead into halftime. A defensive holding penalty on a field-goal attempt gave San Antonio first-and-goal at the Salt Lake 4-yard line late in the first half, but a false start penalty forced the home team to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Nick Rose.

Bertolet again tied the score with his leg, as the former Texas A&M place-kicker split the uprights from 52 yards with 9:20 left in the third quarter to make it 9-9.

San Antonio continues its three-game homestand on Sunday, March 31 as hosts to the Arizona Hotshots. The game, which will start at 7 p.m. CT, will be televised on NFL Network.
