TODAY'S NEWS
The 2019 San Antonio Commanders held its seventh of 22 Training Camp practices on Saturday at Central Catholic High School's Bob Benson '66 Stadium.
The practice started at 11:30 a.m. and finished shortly before 1:15 p.m. with the players wearing shells (helmets and shoulder pads)
The practice sessions was full speed with limited contact.
Highlighting the session was a John Diarse (TCU) one-handed catch down the right sideline.
Others making an impression during the day were linebacker Shaan Washington (Texas A&M) with two pass breakups, Malik Earl (Missouri State) routinely catching every ball throw his way and cornerback Duke Thomas showcasing his physicality in zone coverage as he broke up a pass during a 7-on-7 drill.
Also of note is running back Trey Williams ' (Texas A&M) versatility. Williams has excelled at running the ball, catching passes out out the backfield and returning punts.
Charlie Ebersol, The Alliance of American Football's CEO/Co-founder, was at the practice session. He was joined by former NFL head coach Jeff Fisher .
In transactions, the Commanders have added offensive lineman Mason Gentry (SMU) and wide receiver Greg Ward Jr. (Houston) to the active roster.
Mason Gentry
Appeared in 45 career games at Southern Methodist University along the defensive line ... transitioned to offensive line after college ... made 107 tackles in college, including 8.0 for loss, 4.5 sacks and four passes defended ... undrafted in 2018 NFL Draft.
Greg Ward Jr.
Played in 49 career games at the University of Houston ... played wide receiver and quarterback as a freshman before switching to quarterback full time as a sophomore ... amassed 11,080 yards and 93 total touchdowns at Houston ... 2015 Earl Campbell Award winner ... ranked third in total yards, fourth in passing yards and 10 in rushing yards at Houston ... member of the Super Bowl LII champion Eagles' practice squad in 2017 ... undrafted in 2017 NFL Draft.
In other transactions, the Commanders terminated the rights of defensive back Tre Dickerson via the waiver system.
The Commanders' roster is at 75 players.
A member of The Alliance of American Football, the San Antonio Commanders have an experienced professional coaching and front office staff led by head coach Mike Riley, general manager Daryl Johnston and team president Vic Gregovits.
The Commanders compete in The Alliance of American Football with the Atlanta Legends, Arizona Hotshots, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, Orlando Apollos, Salt Lake Stallions and San Diego Fleet. The Commanders team name draws inspiration from San Antonio's Military City, USA nickname. From Bowie to Travis to the 39,000-plus who graduate each year from military training at Joint Base San Antonio, Commanders have called San Antonio home for more than 300 years.
The Commanders take their first snap on February 9 against the San Diego Fleet with home games being played at the Alamodome.
