San Angelo loses first series of the season

San Angelo Colts News Release


Harlingen, Texas---The first place Colts went to the bottom of the ninth inning clinging to a 7-6 lead. With two outs and a runner at first base, Whitewings (28-31) pinch hitter Alberto Cruz sent his ninth homer of the season over the wall in left field. The two run walk-off shot moved Rio Grande Valley's win streak to four games while defeating San Angelo (38-21) with a score of 8-7. The Colts fall behind three games to none in the series.

The Colts struck in the top of the first inning. San Angelo loaded the bases for Aaron Cone. The Colts third baseman singled to left field scoring Ronnie Gaines. Hunter Jobes was tagged out at home but not after San Angelo nabbed a 1-0 lead.

The Colts were stung by the bat of Brian Nichols yet again in the first inning. Nichols scorched a double off the right field wall scoring two Wings. Rio Grande Valley added another and gained a 3-1 lead.

After collecting a run in the third inning, San Angelo tied the ballgame in the fourth. Careless defense by the Whitewings allowed two Colts runners to cross home plate. The game was knotted at four.

With one out in the fifth frame, Wings third baseman Welinson Baez doubled. A single by backstop Sandy Deleon drove in Baez which represented the fifth run of the game for Rio, regaining the lead 5-4.

San Angelo found the big hit they had been searching for in the eighth inning. The bases were full of Colts; with two outs in the inning, Hank Lanto stepped to the plate. San Angelo's catcher sent a drive deep to right field finding the base of the wall and clearing the bases. After trailing since the first inning, San Angelo regained the lead in a 7-5 ballgame.

The Whitewings managed to bring the game within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Back to back singles, then a double by Rico Santana, scoring Mark Ramos, made it a 7-6 contest.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Rio Grande Valley had their backs against the wall.. With two outs and a runner at first base, the home team trailed by a run. The Whitewings opted to pinch hit Alberto Cruz for DeLeon to face Chace Vacek. Cruz deposited the second pitch of the at bat just over the wall in left field, the two run homer ended the ballgame. It was the second time in two nights the Whitewings celebrated at home plate. The 8-7 win gave Rio Grande Valley a three game to none lead in the four game set. It is the first series of the season the Colts have lost three out of four.

Notes: Colts second baseman Bryan Frichter left the first inning with a contusion to his right index finger. Frichter attempted a drag bunt, the ball struck his finger causing Bryan to leave the ballgame after grounding out. The league leader, with a .409 batting average, is day-to-day.
