Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive have received first baseman Sam Travis from the Short-A Lowell Spinners, and he has been added to the active roster for Friday's game. Travis was selected by the Boston Red Sox as their second-round selection (67th overall) in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Indiana University.

Travis joined the Lowell Spinners shortly after signing on June 16th, and he posted outstanding offensive numbers in 40 games with the team, including a .333 average, 55 hits, 28 runs, four homers, 30 RBI and a .448 slugging percentage. In his last 10 games with Lowell, he was hitting .475 (19-40), including four consecutive multi-hit games.

Prior to signing with the Red Sox, Travis enjoyed a standout three-year career at Indiana, which included two trips to the College World Series, All-American honors and the 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year Award. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2012 after hitting .319 with nine homers and 50 RBI.

As a sophomore, he helped lead the Hoosiers to Omaha after hitting .316 with 10 homers and 57 RBI, and he followed that up with an even better season in 2014. The team returned to the College World Series, and Travis was named an All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year thanks to a .347 average, 12 homers and 59 RBI.

He becomes the third player selected by the Red Sox in the 2014 draft to play for the Drive this season, joining outfielder Cole Sturgeon (10th round, University of Louisville) and infielder Hector Lorenzana (37th round, University of Oklahoma).
