Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announce that they have signed forward Jay Henderson for the 2009-10 season.

Henderson will fill the Salmon Kings' recently vacated fourth veteran spot, and joins the team after spending the 2008-09 season with Innsbruck EV in Austria where he scored 18 goals and added 14 assists in 50 games played with 104 minutes in penalties.

"Jay brings a mixture of skill and grit, which should compliment our other players' style of play," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. "He is a proven winner with three Calder cups in his pocket and NHL experience. He should have an immediate impact on our team with his leadership qualities."

The Edmonton, Alberta native spent parts of three seasons (1998-99 through 2000-01) in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins where he played in 33 games scoring four points (1g-3a) while accumulating 37 penalty minutes. Henderson joined the Bruins' organization after being selected by Boston with the last pick (#246 overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

The 5-11, 190 lb. Henderson has spent the majority of his career in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Providence Bruins, Hartford Wolf Pack, Houston Aeros, and Milwaukee Admirals. His best offensive season in the AHL came in the 1999-00 season with Providence where he amassed 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points in 60 games while serving 200 minutes in penalties. That spring he helped the Bruins win their lone Calder Cup Championship banking three points (1g-2a) in 14 games played with 16 penalty minutes. Henderson went on to win two more Calder Cups (2002-03 with Houston and 2003-04 with Milwaukee) to become one of only two players to have won the AHL's championship trophy with three separate teams. Henderson is Providence's all-time leader in games played with 278. For his AHL career Henderson has played in 384 games while tallying 168 points (77g-91a) and 1105 penalty minutes.

The 31-year-old spent the three seasons prior to 2008-09 in the German Elite League (DEL) with the Augsburg Panthers and Frankfurt Lions. His most productive campaign took place in 2007-08 with the Lions where he scored 22 goals and assisted on 24 others for 46 points in 55 games while accruing 36 penalty minutes. During his time in Germany, Henderson compiled 102 points (54g-48a) in 149 games played with 200 minutes in penalties.

For his professional career, Henderson has scored 146 goals and 160 assists for 306 points in 616 games with 1,446 penalty minutes. The forward has also participated in 84 career professional playoff games scoring 23 points (8g-15a) and adding 172 minutes in penalties.

Prior to turning professional, Henderson spent his entire four-year junior career in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels and the Edmonton Ice. For his junior career, Henderson has played in 263 games scoring 194 points (95g-99a) and tallying 478 penalty minutes.
