Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met for Game 2 of the National Conference Quarter-Finals tonight. The Condors used an overtime goal by Kevin Truelson early in the first overtime period to grab a 1-0 series lead on Thursday night.
The first period saw both teams throwing their body around, adding a physical element to the game. The Condors struck first, a Kings' turnover would prove costly as Chris Di Ubaldo received a pass alone in the slot and fired it past Salmon Kings' netminder Billy Thompson for the 1-0 Bakersfield lead at 12:28 of the first period. The chippy play would continue, but the 1-0 score would hold up through 20 minutes.
The Salmon Kings tied the game when Wes Goldie burst down the right side putting a move on the defenseman to come in alone on Condors' netminder Yutaka Fukufuji. Goldie's initial shot was stopped, but Ryan Wade fired the rebound in to tie the game. Less than two minutes later the Condors and Kings were playing 4-on-4 hockey. Thompson made the initial save when Steve Slonina's rebound shot slid into the right post and sat there until Andrew Ianiero picked it up and put it into the empty cage behind Thompson. The Condors increased their lead to 3-1 when a Jay Langager shot bounced off a skate onto Alexander Naurov's stick who fired it in. The Condors led 3-1 after 40 minutes.
The Salmon Kings began to pepper Fukufuji in the third period, but appeared to be derailed by a Paul Ballantyne high sticking minor. The two-minute penalty did not deter the Kings as Matt Kelly streaked down the left side of the rink and slipped by the defenseman to create a 2-on-1 with Ryan Wade. He passed the puck to Wade who reached out and chipped it past Fukufuji for the shorthanded marker and his second of the night. Wade completed the hat trick 21 seconds later, again shorthanded, when he took a pass from Wes Goldie toe-dragged past the defenseman and out waited Fukufuji before firing it home. The Salmon Kings completed the comeback when Darryl Lloyd was in the right corner and slipped the puck past the defenseman onto Chris St. Jacques stick who put the puck past Fukufuji with 3:30 remaining. Victoria clamped down the rest of the way. Salmon Kings 4 Condors 3. Series tied 1-1.
Victoria went 0/7=0% with the man advantage and Bakersfield went 1/5=20%. The Salmon Kings out shot the Condors 38-27.
The Salmon Kings and Condors now head to California for the next three games of this Best-of-Seven series. Game 3 is on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. live from the Rabobank Arena. Game 4 is on Wednesday evening followed by Game 5 on Saturday night. If necessary the teams will return to Victoria the following Tuesday for Game 6 and Wednesday for Game 7 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre both contests beginning at 7:05 p.m. Phone 220-7889 for tickets.
