Salmon Kings Outlast Grizzlies In Shootout

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night showdown the Victoria Salmon Kings and the Utah Grizzlies met in the rubber match of their three-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings started Leland Irving between the pipes, while the Grizzlies countered with Mitch O'Keefe.

The Salmon Kings got on the board first when they scored the lone goal of the frame at the 4:53 mark as they connected on the man advantage. Jimmy Sharrow let a wrist shot go from the left point that found its way through a maze in front of the net and eluded the Grizzlies' goaltender. The goal was Sharrow's ninth of the season, and gave Victoria a 1-0 edge heading into the first intermission.

The Grizzlies registered their first goal of the game at the 15:02 mark of the second period. Just after a penalty to the Salmon Kings expired, A.J. Perry redirected a point shot in for his 19th tally of the campaign to knot the game at 1-1. With a mere six seconds left in the frame Utah took their first lead as Lance Galbraith netted his seventh marker of the season past Irving on the power play.

Victoria deadlocked the contest at two apiece while on the power play just 2:06 into the final frame. Wes Goldie drilled a shot from the blue line that soared past the glove of O'Keefe. The goal was Goldie's team-leading 32nd of the season. Both goaltenders closed the door through the remainder of regulation as the Salmon Kings and Grizzlies went to overtime.

O'Keefe and Irving turned away all of the shots in the extra frame as the clubs would play the third shootout of this series. The Salmon Kings were able to get goals past O'Keefe on all four attempts with Chad Painchaud netting the fourth attempt. The Grizzlies were only able to capitalize three times with Irving making the decisive stop on Peter Aston. Salmon Kings 3 Grizzlies 2 in a shootout.

Victoria went 2/825.0% on the power play, while Utah was 1/911.1%. The Grizzlies outshot the Salmon Kings 36-34.

The Salmon Kings' next series will be at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre as they host the Alaska Aces on Thursday, February 11th, Saturday, February 13th with puck drop for both games at 7:05. The series will then conclude on Sunday, February 14th with puck drop at 1:05 after the game on February 14th, the Salmon Kings will present their final "Skate with the Salmon Kings" for 2009-10 season.
