Salmon Kings Knock Off Steelheads
November 19, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Boise, ID - In a Wednesday night matchup, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads met in the first of a three-game set at the Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho. The Salmon Kings' David Shantz started in net while the Steelheads gave Rejean Beauchemin the start.
Victoria got on the board early when Wes Goldie clicked on the power play. Goldie walked out of the left wing corner and wristed a shot past Beauchemin from the goal line that found the far post and bounced in. It was the 250th goal of Goldie's ECHL career. Idaho answered shortly after when Brandan Kushniruk found a rebound of a Mike Neal shot and beat Shantz. Goldie would then intercept a Mark Derlago pass and then put an inside-out move on defenseman Weston Taylor before snapping the highlight reel goal past Beauchemin. The Steelheads bounced back late in the period when Kushniruk found Mathieu Tousignant in the slot. Tousignant blasted a one-timer over the glove shoulder of Shantz.
The Kings struck for the only goal of the second frame when Scott Howes stole the puck and slipped it to Adam Taylor. The Kings' centerman fired a wrist shot from inside the left circle into the top right corner behind Beauchemin.
Victoria jumped out first in period number three when Olivier Latendresse notched his fourth goal of the season. Taylor Ellington started the play when he carried the puck up ice and down into the right wing corner of the Steelheads zone. Ellington passed the puck out to the front of the net where Mike Hamilton fired a shot that Beauchemin stopped, but the rebound went to Latendresse who buried the puck into the net. Randall Gelech would make it a 5-2 game when he would carry the puck off the right wing wall and snapped home a shot past the Idaho goaltender. The Steelheads would make it 5-3 when Michael Neal would put a rebound of a Cody Lampl shot past Shantz, but that was as close as Idaho would come. Salmon Kings 5 Steeleheads 3.
Victoria went 1-1100% on the power play, while Idaho was 0-40%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 49-29.
The Salmon Kings continue their three-game set versus Idaho on Friday and Saturday nights, with both games starting at 6:10 pm PT. Victoria returns home to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre to face the Ontario Reign for a two-game set with matches on Friday, November 27th, and Saturday, November 28th. Puck drop for both games is 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
