Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met for Game 4 of their National Conference Quarter-Finals tonight in Bakersfield. Victoria held a 2-1 series lead after Tuesday evening's 3-2 overtime victory.
The Salmon Kings got out to a quick start when Ash Goldie skated out from the left side boards to an empty slot area. He wired a shot that Condors netminder Yutaka Fukufuji made the first save, but the rebound bounced back onto Goldie's stick and he made no mistake firing it in for the 1-0 lead. Victoria threw 20 shots at the Bakerfield net, but was unable to light the lamp for a second time. The Salmon Kings' Billy Thompson stopped all nine of the Condors shots in the first period and the Kings led 1-0.
Bakersfield began to fire more rubber at Thompson in the second and they were rewarded with a power play goal at the 13:13 mark. Mark Derlago's shot from the left circle was stopped by Thompson, but the rebound squirted through the crease and Andrew Ianiero popped it into the net to tie the game 1-1. With less than two minutes remaining the Kings retook the lead when Ryan Wade fed a cross ice pass to Dylan Yeo who blasted a one-timer past Fukufuji. With 26.9 seconds remaining in the period, Chris St. Jacques blocked a shot then fought past Condors defenseman Kevin Truelson to create a 2-on-1 with Darryl Lloyd. St. Jacques slid a beautiful pass across to the hard charging Lloyd who tipped it up-and-in to give the Kings a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Bakersfield pressed in the third period, but the result was a handful of chances for the Salmon Kings. Fukufuji stopped both Wes Goldie and St. Jacques on breakaways early in the third. Wes Goldie would be the only player to hit the board in the third when he wired a shot past the Bakersfield netminder. The Salmon Kings played solid road hockey the rest of the way. Salmon Kings 4 Condors 1. Victoria leads the series 3-1.
Victoria went 0/7=0% with the man advantage and Bakersfield went 1/6=16.7%. The Salmon Kings out shot the Condors 38-27.
The Salmon Kings and Condors take a two day break before returning to the ice on Saturday evening for Game 5 in Bakersfield at 7 p.m. If necessary the teams will return to Victoria the following Tuesday for Game 6 and Wednesday for Game 7 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre both contests beginning at 7:05 p.m. Phone 220-7889 for tickets.
