Salmon Kings Foundation Ready to Roll

June 13, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings Hockey Club are pleased to announce the creation of the Salmon Kings Foundation. "The Foundation will operate as the charity arm of the ECHL Salmon Kings and serve as a single focus point for all fundraising activities involving the Victoria Salon Kings," said team spokesman Adam Olsen. The Salmon Kings Foundation will operate through an agreement with the Victoria Foundation, the second oldest City foundation in Canada.

The goal of the Salmon Kings Foundation will be to raise funds and actively promote social awareness in sport, health and welfare, and the environment. "It is not a goal we (the Salmon Kings) take lightly. If we expect to become ‘Victoria's team' then we need to accept the responsibility that goes along with that. Giving back to the citizens of Southern Vancouver Island that support the team is part of that responsibility," added Olsen.

Through various activities in the new 7,000 seat, Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, as well as those held in the community, the Salmon Kings expect to raise significant funds on an annual basis. The Salmon Kings Foundation's ability to collect and disburse these funds with almost no overhead is therefore a very attractive option.

"We intend on becoming not only an integral part of the community as a sports and entertainment vehicle but just as importantly as a fundraising vehicle. The Salmon Kings Foundation will become a point of pride for the players as well as the community. At the end of the season when our players see how much good they have done we believe it will add to the honour they will feel in being a "Salmon King," said Ken Noakes, Salmon Kings Director of Sales and Marketing.

The Victoria Foundation is also excited about the addition of the Salmon Kings Foundation. "The Victoria Foundation is pleased to be working with an organization that understands their social responsibility and take satisfaction in raising funds for the community that supports them," states Ian Izard, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Victoria Foundation.

In this vein the Salmon Kings Foundation is pleased to announce the first not-for-profit organization that will be an annual beneficiary of their efforts, KidSport.

"KidSport Greater Victoria is proud to be associated with the Salmon Kings Foundation. This partnership will help KidSport greatly as we continue to provide opportunities for children to become involved in sport where financial barriers exist. The Foundation's assistance will help us ensure we continue to help so that all kids can play", said Alison Ducharme and Patti Hunter, Co-Chairs of KidSport Greater Victoria.

KidSport raises funds to pay for registration into organized sports activities for children that would not normally be able to participate due to economic circumstances. "KidSport is the type of organization that fits into the philosophy of what the Salmon Kings Foundation stands for. We believe physical activity promotes both a sound mind and a sound body. It also produces better citizens. We're truly excited to help out," said Ken Noakes.

There is no schedule for further announcements of partners rather the announcements will take place in conjunction with releases of various activities undertaken by the Salmon Kings and the Salmon Kings Foundation.
