Saints Week in Review

January 27, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

Coming Up This Week – The Saints finally get to play back on home ice this weekend after 4 straight weekends on the road. On Friday the Saints host Tulsa, with El Paso coming to town on Saturday. After Saturday the Saints will not have another home game until Feb. 28th.

Week In Review – The Saints went 0-2-0 this week with road losses to Odessa on Friday night and to Austin on Saturday.

Saints in the City – The Saints players continue to participate in Awards Ceremonies for all the San Angelo elementary schools’ Accelerated Reader Programs. The team is also trying to gear up our Grades for Blades program in the elementary schools for the February report cards. We also have players going out to talk to juvenile offenders at our area Juvenile Detention Center.

January 24th / San Angelo 5 - Odessa 6 / The Saints jumped out on top of the Jacks as Kori Davison scored just 1:25 into the first period, but the game leveled out and there was no more scoring until the Jacks tied the game during a 5-on-3 power play late in the period. The Saints regained the lead on Matt Frick’s goal midway through the 2nd period – but the lead was short-lived as the Jacks then put in 3 goals in less than 5 minutes to take a 4-2 lead into the 3rd period. An unassisted goal by the Jacks’ Greg Gatto just 15 seconds into the 3rd period seemingly put the game away, but the Saints showed some heart and fought back with Trevor Weisgerber’s goal and two by Steve Roberts, including a penalty shot. But, another ugly give-away led to another unassisted goal, this one by John Bossio, which proved to be the game-winner.

January 25th / San Angelo 1 - Austin 5 / In a game where they totally dominated the action for almost the entire game – the Saints could not put the puck in the net and again doomed themselves with defensive mistakes in their own zone as they fell to the Ice Bats in a game where the final score certainly does not tell the tale. A bad give-away behind the Saints’ net led to an early 1-0 Bats lead and they went up 2-0 less than 5-minutes into the game. The Saints got one back in the 2nd period on Trevor Weisgerber’s power-play goal. But, with the Saints on a power-play and a chance to tie the game – another bad give-away led to a short-handed goal for Austin and a 3-1 lead heading into the 3rd period. The Saints pulled out all the stops in the 3rd period, but couldn’t score and gave up several odd-man rushes that led to two more Austin goals and the final 5-1 score.

Playoff Picture – The Saints didn’t help themselves this weekend in the race for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. Currently Lubbock holds the 4th spot with 43 points. The Saints are still stuck at 30 points had would have to leap-frog New Mexico, Corpus Christi and Lubbock to get to the post-season.

Injury Report – Jan Jas and Kelly Miller will both miss significant time with their recent injuries. Jason Abel is still on the 45-day disabled list. Corri Moffat returned this past weekend after missing several weeks with his injury. Forward Joey Grasso has been added to the roster to fill in some of the empty space.
