St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 26, 2008) - In a brisk two hours and five minutes the St. Paul Saints, who will spend more days in first place than any other team, watched the Sioux Falls Canaries celebrate the first half North Division Championship in a 6-2 loss at Sioux Falls Stadium on Thursday night.

Pitching was the theme of the night and for the second consecutive start against the Saints Ben Moore impressed. Moore allowed his first base hit in the second inning to Zach Goldberg and followed with a walk to Steve Butler to load the bases. Moore, however got Ryan Priddy to ground out to end the inning. Moore would give up just one more hit, a two-run homer to new Saint Heath Keel in the seventh. That was the only other hit the Saints got as Moore went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits walking three and striking out six.

The Canaries, who have hit 25 of their 39 homers at home, hit three homers on the night and got it started with a solo homer from Grant Richardson in the first, his third of the season.

The Canaries exploded for five runs in the fifth courtesy of two homers and two Saints errors. With one out Patrick Reilly hit a solo homer to right, his eighth of the season. Paul Smyth then hit a pop foul down the first base line that Julius Thames dropped giving Smyth another chance which he used to his advantage by singling to center. Tim Hutting followed with a single to left-center putting runners at first and second. Kennard Bibbs hit a grounder under first baseman Tim Brown's glove allowing Smyth to score and making it 3-0. Richardson then hit his second homer of the night, fourth of the season, to cap off the scoring.

The two teams meet in the second game of the four game series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Alec Shepherd (2-3, 7.87) to the mound against Canaries LHP Ryan Ford (5-3, 2.61). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
