Saints Use Blunt Force to Top Goldeyes 14-1

ST. PAUL, MN (August 19, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints rode the hot bat of Donald Blunt and the electric arm of Mark Hamburger on Monday in front of 3,873 to cruise to a 14-1 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Blunt came into play hitting just .205 on the season, but went 2-5 with a pair of long balls, one of which was a grand slam, to tally five RBI. On the mound Hamburger was just as gritty going 8.0 solid innings while allowing just one unearned run on five hits to go along with six strikeouts.

The scoring started early in the ball game for the Saints as they notched single runs in each of the first two innings. After Adam Frost led off the first inning with a double he was brought in on another double from Brian Burgamy to jump ahead 1-0. In the second, catcher Chris Manning singled home Trevor Hairgrove for his first career RBI and pushed the lead to 2-0.

The fireworks began in the fifth when Burgamy struck again, this time doubling the lead, by lifting a two-run blast to left for his sixth home run with the Saints. The first baseman finished the night 2-5 with a double, homer two RBI and a run scored.

Blunt hit his first home run of the night, and second of the season, in the sixth inning, a solo shot to make it 5-0 Saints.

After the Goldeyes got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the seventh, the Saints answered back in a big way in the bottom half. Adam Frost scored on a wild pitch and both Jose Hernandez and Joey Becker knocked run-scoring hits to widen the gap to 8-1.

The floodgates opened in the eighth, with the big hit being the grand slam by Blunt to extend the lead to 14-1. Blunt entered play with two career home runs and six RBI on the season.

With the three home runs they hit on Monday, the Saints have hit the fourth most home runs in a single-season in franchise history with 89. That number puts the Saints seven home runs away from the record which is currently the 96, hit in 1999.

The same two teams do battle again on Tuesday night in game two of a four game series with the Saints throwing RHP Billy Soule (3-0, 8.06) and the Goldeyes countering with LHP Chris Salamida (4-0, 2.48).
