Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - With less than a quarter of the regular season schedule yet to be played, the first place Dubuque Fighting Saints have a four point advantage over the second place Omaha Lancers. Further aiding the Fighting Saints in their quest to secure the top seed in the Western Conference is the fact that they have played one fewer game to this point than the Lancers have. The playoff push continues this weekend, as fans have a chance to see the Saints play back-to-back home games for the second-to-last time this season.
As the Sioux City Musketeers play the Fighting Saints on Saturday night, the Saints' organization and fans will welcome back the team's most celebrated alumnus to Dubuque.
Gary Suter, whose son Jake plays for Sioux City, will drop the ceremonial first puck prior to the game. Suter played for the Fighting Saints for the 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons, helping to bring the franchise's second Clark Cup Championship to Dubuque in his second season with the team. Additionally, that team won the Anderson Cup Championship in 1982-83 as regular season champions of the league.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Suter played at the University of Wisconsin before moving on to an illustrious professional career. Suter played for 17 seasons in the National Hockey League, winning a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989. His 844 career points are the 14th most for any defenseman in the NHL, and 13th most for any American player. Late in his career, Suter played on two Olympic teams for the United States, winning a silver medal at the games in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Prior to the return of Suter on Saturday, Friday night's game against Green Bay will feature the USHL's two conference leaders. The Gamblers will visit Dubuque for the third time this year. In the series thus far, the home team has won each of the four meetings between the two teams. The Gamblers are defending Clark Cup Playoff Champions, and have the inside track to winning the Anderson Cup as the league's best regular season team this year.
Saturday's game will be a significant test for the Fighting Saints as they gear up for playoff action. Green Bay's first visit to the Key City saw the Saints romp to a 6-0 victory - an early- season signature win for the new franchise. Green Bay's second trip to Dubuque was perhaps the most exciting game that the Saints have played at home this year, with Dubuque coming out on top of a 5-4 contest.
Fighting Saints fans will have one last chance on Friday night to take advantage of the Telegraph Herald Family Four Pack. The Fighting Saints have brought this offer back by popular demand, as Family Four Pack Sections have sold out for each of the previous five game dates of the offer. Fans can purchase four tickets, four jumbo slices of Happy Joe's Pizza, four sodas, and a game program, all for just $44. Demand is expected to be strong once again, and fans should remember that the offer expires at 6 PM on the night of the game.
Despite Dubuque's 1-0 loss to Waterloo on Tuesday, the Fighting Saints first shutout loss of the season, the Saints' goaltending has remained hot. Tuesday's contest was the third game in a row that the Fighting Saints limited their opponent to one goal scored. Netminder Jackson Teichroeb has played exceptionally well recently for Dubuque, compiling a 5-1-1 record in his last seven starts. Teichroeb has allowed just two goals in his last 129:09 in net - a span of more than two games.
Fans interested in tickets can call the Fighting Saints at (563) 583-6880, visit www.dubuquefightingsaints.com, or stop by the Mystique Community Ice Center Box Office between 10 AM and 6 PM, Monday through Friday. Family Four Pack tickets are available only over the phone and at the box office. All games will be broadcast on Dubuque's Super Hits 106 and streamed on superhits106.com, with pregame coverage starting a half hour before puck drop.
