Saints Re-Sign Second All-Star this Week, Concordia University Grad Jake Schmidt

ST. PAUL, MN (December 16, 2010) - St. Paul Saints manager George Tsamis is making sure his 2011 roster includes his All-Star's from last season re-signing Jake Schmidt, a 2009 graduate of Concordia University-St. Paul.

The 23-year-old was 8-7 with a 5.46 ERA in 22 games (18 starts). In 113.2 innings pitched he walked 44 and tied for fourth in the American Association with 101 strikeouts. Schmidt did appear to tire in the second half of the season, pitching more innings than he ever had in his career, but was a stellar 6-3 with a 3.02 ERA through July 6. He didn't allow a run in his first three appearances, all out of the bullpen, shutting out opponents over 7.2 innings of work.

In the All-Star Game he hurled 1.2 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out two.

Schmidt lives in Oakdale and was a 41st round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in the 2009 June Amateur Draft. He appeared in two games at the Rookie Level with the Arizona Cubs and allowed two hits while walking one and striking out three in 2.0 innings of work.

While at Concordia University - St. Paul, Schmidt was named the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year. He set the single game, season and career strikeout mark for Concordia while posting a 7-2 record. He struck out a career high 16 in a seven inning contest at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. In his following start he struck out 14, which set the single season mark of 103, breaking his own record of 100 from the previous season, and the school's career mark at 273.

Schmidt is the second player the Saints re-signed this week also re-signing All-Star first baseman Jason Cooper on Monday. The Saints can carry a maximum of 23 players on their roster during the first 10 days of the season and then must be down to the league maximum of 22 players after that.
