Saints' Rally Falls Short, Lose 5-4 to RedHawks

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints offense was stymied for the first six innings, but after an injury to Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks starter Taylor Stanton forced the bullpen into action the bats awoke. Unfortunately, the late game rally fell a little short as the Saints lost 5-4 on Thursday night in front of 9,331 at Midway Stadium.

With the Saints trailing 3-0 going into the seventh RedHawks starter Stanton left the ballgame with an injury as he was warming up and getting ready to begin the inning. That forced the RedHawks to turn to reliever Kevin Fuqua. The Saints jumped on him for a pair of runs. Brandon Tripp led off with a single to left. With two outs Dwight Childs singled Tripp to second. Jared McDonald then looped a single to center that scored Tripp. On the play center fielder Nick Jackson's throw to third was high and went towards the Saints dugout allowing Childs to score on the play and making it 3-2.

In the eighth Saints starter Anthony Claggett hit leadoff hitter CJ Retherford. Ronnie Bourquin followed with his third double of the game to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Mikey Mehlich came on in relief and got two huge outs, on a strike out and a groundout that held the runners. Anthony Kaskadden, however, looped a two-run, two-out single that gave the RedHawks a 5-2 lead.

Once again the Saints mounted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Reliever Coty Woods started the inning, but left the game when he fielded an infield tapper by Evan Bigley, wheeled towards first and threw off balance too late and injured himself on the play. Justin Erasmus came into the game and the second batter he faced, Angelo Songco drilled a two-run homer over the right field wall, his sixth of the season, to cut the deficit to one. It would be as close as the Saints would get.

The Saints head out on the road for a three-game series against the Gary SouthShore Railcats at U.S. Steel Yard beginning on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. The Saints send RHP Nick Barnese (3-4, 3.44) against Railcats RHP Morgan Coombs (3-4, 5.06). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
