Saints Hold Strong to Lead, Come out on Top in CR

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Another one-goal game. Make it the 23rd out of 41 tries for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, who came out on top in this one. The Saints got a goal in the first and second periods, and held the fort in the third to pick up the 2-1 win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday night at The Stable.

It took 17 flashy saves from goaltender James Durham and a massively important penalty kill in the closing minutes of the third period to hold on to the win. A wild third period ensued with the Riders outshooting the Saints 18-16, and even after Graham Slaggert cut the Saints' two-goal lead to one, the team found a way to hold on in the final seconds.

Durham, following a shutout in his first start in Cedar Rapids, was the man of the hour for the Saints in his second go-around at The Stable. A key breakaway save on Jason Polin following a turnover helped Dubuque turn the tides in the first period.

Viktor Bovbel dangled around a defender and slipped the puck to Taylor Schneider, who cut through the rest of the defense and froze Blake Pietila with a fake shot, and subsequently deposited the puck into the back of the net with a backhand shot to put the visitors up 1-0 late in the first period

More fisticuffs from Matt Stoia began the second period on an aggressive note, and it was the Fighting Saints who entered the locker room after 40 with plenty to smile about. A power move from Chayse Primeau behind the net sent a pass through the blue paint to a crashing Scott Corbett, who buried the goal for his fifth of the season. The goal extended the Saints' lead to 2-0.

The game solidified the season series victory for the Saints, who have picked up wins in five of the seven games, with one more matchup to come on March 30 on home ice.
