Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA - An evening after being shut out at home, the Dubuque Fighting Saints righted the ship, scoring three goals in the first period and snapping a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in front of a sold-out Mystique Community Ice Center. 3,406 fans cheered Dubuque to a pivotal victory that pulled the Fighting Saints just one point behind the Waterloo Black Hawks for the lead in the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup Standings, and just one point back of the RoughRiders in the USHL's Eastern Conference.

Dubuque's offense was quiet Friday, but it was a different story Saturday. Only 4:06 into the game, the Fighting Saints brought the large crowd to its feet with an early strike. Karson Kuhlman maneuvered the puck to Shane Eiserman on the right wing. Eiserman cut to the middle of the ice and fired a pass across to Dylan Gambrell on the left wing. He one-timed a shot into the net to make it 1-0 Dubuque.

Dubuque doubled its lead four minutes later. Jarrid Privitera left the puck for Brett Boeing in the high slot. He snapped a wrist shot that beat goaltender Chris Birdsall, who never saw the shot due to a screen in front. The goal came at 8:34 of the first period.

Shane Kavanagh scored Dubuque's third goal of the first period on an odd-bounce from a bad angle. Kavanagh rushed down the left wing side into the Cedar Rapids zone. He threw a shot on net from the corner that bounced off Birdsall's pad and deflected over the goal line to make it 3-0. Jason Ford and Eric Robinson assisted on the goal. Shortly following the tally, Cedar Rapids coach Mark Carlson lifted Birdsall from the game in place of Danny Tirone.

The two teams traded goals in the second period. Dubuque's Jordan Klimek's wrist shot from the left point sailed over the glove of Tirone to make it 4-0 at 13:23. Cedar Rapids would also get a goal from the blue line as Mark Auk scored a powerplay goal from Ivan Provorov at 17:33. Auk's one-timer eluded goaltender Kevin Reich to make it 4-1.

Dubuque quickly struck on the powerplay in period three. Gambrell scored his second goal of the game, flipping a shot from the high slot that deflected into the net to make it 5-1 Fighting Saints. Keegan Ford worked the puck to Max McHugh, and the veteran dished it to Gambrell in the slot. Gambrell's shot beat Tirone glove side at 39 seconds of the period.

Dylan Steman scored a final goal for Cedar Rapids to make it 5-2 at 12:38, knocking in a rebound on a mad scramble.

The Fighting Saints outshot Cedar Rapids 35-24 in the victory.

On Saturday, the Fighting Saints wore special black uniforms featuring a chrome version of the Fighting Saints "D-Logo" on the front of the uniform for the BLACK OUT GAME presented by Truck Country. After the game, the jerseys were auctioned off with all proceeds benefitting the Dubuque Youth Hockey Association. Goaltender Kevin Reich's jersey went for a team-high of $1,500.

Dubuque hits the road next week for three games. The Fighting Saints play Thursday in Youngstown, and Saturday and Sunday in Ann Arbor for games against Team USA U-17. All three games can be heard on Super Hits 106.1 FM.
