Saints Come out on Top in Three-Way at Midway

ST. PAUL, MN - The last time three teams played a baseball game against each other was 60 years ago, but the St. Paul Saints, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Minneapolis Cobras put on quite a show at Midway Stadium on Friday night in front of 1,659. After a 12 inning affair the Saints scored 20 runs, the RedHawks plated 10 and the Cobras scored four.

The Saints and RedHawks battled for the first six innings of the night, the Cobras jumped in to take on the RedHawks during innings seven through nine and the Cobras and Saints finished off the game in innings 10-12. The Saints put up a five spot on the RedHawks in inning number one. With one out Joe Bonfe and Evan Bigley walked. Henry Wrigley doubled home Bonfe to put the Saints on the board. Brandon Tripp and Joey Becker each added two-run singles in the inning to give the Saints up 5-2 on the RedHawks.

In the third Willie Cabrera hit an opposite field solo homer to give the Saints a 6-2 lead.

With the score 6-3 and the Saints batting for the final time in the sixth, before they sat out their three innings, they put up three more runs. Becker led off with a double. He finished the night 4-5 with a double, four RBI and a run scored. With one out Bradnon Wikoff walked. Bonfe followed with an RBI double to give the Saints a 7-3 lead. Bigley's sacrifice fly made it 8-3 and three batters later Angelo Songco drove home two with a two-run single to make it 10-3.

In their final three innings at bat the RedHawks scored seven runs against the Cobras, scoring three in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth. The last run came on a solo homer by Travis Higgs.

The Cobras proved more than competitive and got their first run in the ninth inning. Erik Quarburg led off with a single. Jake Krause doubled to left, but Quarburg was thrown out trying to score with Krause advancing to third on the throw. J.E. Urseth's groundout scored Krause to get the Cobras on the board.

After scoring one in the 11th the Cobras struck for two in the 12th on an RBI double by Quarburg, who scored when Krause's grounder to third bounced over Bonfe and went into left field.

The Saints take on the Metro Minny All-Stars on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Castle Field in Anoka. The game is presented by Killebrew Root Beer.
