Rascals Rally Late to Knock off Wingnuts

O'Fallon, MO (May 9th, 2014) - The Wichita Wingnuts led for most of the afternoon on Friday at TR Hughes Ballpark against the River City Rascals, but a three-run eighth inning and three more in the ninth pushed the Rascals to an 8-5 win.

The Wingnuts jumped ahead 1-0 early when J.T. Wise ripped a home run to straight-away center field.

Wichita has managed to put together a big inning of at least three runs in each of their four games so far this spring and on Friday it came in the third against Cory Caruso. Four straight Wingnuts reached to start the frame, with Brent Clevlen driving in a pair on a groundball single into left field. After Chun-Hsiu Chen walked, Wise struck again, this time with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Chris McMurray finished off the inning with an RBI to push the lead to five runs.

The lead held until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Rascals scored a pair off of Michael Schlact on a two-RBI single by Saxon Butler.

The Wingnuts led 5-2 entering the eighth inning, but the Rascals were not finished. River City scored three runs against Nelson Curry on three hits and three walks. The big hit was a clutch, game-tying double by Bryan Aanderud with two outs.

After the Wingnuts went scoreless in their half of the ninth inning, Taylor Ard led off with a home run against Wichita's Patrick Mincey to take a 6-5 lead and seal the win. Being an exhibition game, the teams continued play and the Rascals eventually put two more runs on the board before three outs were recorded.

Justin Klipp worked 3.0 scoreless innings at the beginning of game to push his scoreless inning streak this spring to six. Wise led the offense by going 1-3 with a home run and two RBI at the plate.
