Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Dubuque Fighting Saints made it nine wins in a row with a 3-0 victory over the Team USA NTDP Under-17 squad on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
Jaxon Castor earned the first shutout of the season for the Fighting Saints, putting forth a 21-save effort. While at times the U17s could not generate much offense, Castor was forced to make several key stops, especially early in the third period.
The Fighting Saints got on the board 11 minutes into the first period with a shot from the point by Joey Keane. The goal was originally credited to Keane, even amongst the traffic provided by Shane Kavanagh. After the game, Kavanagh got credit for the goal, his sixth of the season.
They followed up the performance with more traffic out in front, resulting in a goal by Willie Knierim late in the first. He deflected a shot from the left point by Keegan Ford, notching his third goal in as many games since his return to the lineup from the World Junior A Challenge.
Kavanagh ended his first-star performance with another goal off of a feed from Nathan Sucese on a quickly developing two-on-one chance. He picked a spot through the pads of Adam Scheel and made it 3-0 late in regulation time.
Scheel did his best to try and slow down the Saints' offense. He ended his stellar night denying 46 shots on goal, many of them of the grade-A variety.
The top line accounted for six points and directly accounted for every tally tonight for the Fighting Saints. Each of them added two points on the night.
Dubuque's power play was afforded six opportunities on the night, and came up empty on each.
With the win, the Saints retain their lead in the Anderson Cup and Eastern Conference standings, being the first team to hit the 20-win mark in the USHL this season.
Up next for the Fighting Saints is a rematch with the U17s, and a chance to make it ten wins in a row on Saturday night at a special holiday time of 6:05 p.m. Meet your favorite "Heroes in a Half Shell," the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as they come to town and take in the action.
